Centrella Inn

My husband and I stayed at the Centrella Hotel for 5 nights in September 2026. This was our second stay at the property, the first being in May 2019. Our review of that first visit was very positive--we rated it a 5. This time? We're generously giving it a 2. The Centrella is a National Historic Landmark Property. It was acquired by the Kirkwood Collection Group several years ago. Before that, it was privately owned. We requested room #22, the room we had on our 2019 visit. The staff obliged. First the good-- 1. The Centrella has an excellent location. We were close to everything we wanted to do. Many places were within easy walking distance. 2. The front desk staff is lovely. Rene (the manager), Olivia, and Talia provide good, friendly service. Their communication with us and other guests was always accommodating and warm. The Centrella is lucky to have them. 3. Our room had a good shower and plenty of hot water. 4. The daily text-based communications regarding housekeeping service was nice. Now the disappointing-- 1. The Centrella's common areas are spacious, but in need of a lot of work. Carpeting was dirty and worn--it could use a deep cleaning, at a minimum. Walls need gouges filled-in and a good paint job. Couches should be either recovered or replaced. 2. Breakfast--with the exception of the yogurt parfait--was terrible. Cheap pastries and bagels and the hard-to -identify juice were always available, but they were unappetizing. This property previously served a much nicer breakfast that included a hot dish and more pastry and bread options. It would be simple to remedy this and at very little cost. The Centrella is, after all, a Bed & Breakfast property. 3. Wine --but no accompanying snacks of any kind--is kept behind the front desk. Guests must request a glass, the first of which is complimentary. Subsequent glasses are $5.00 each. We have never experienced anything like this in any Bed and Breakfast property we have ever visited. For the record, we did not partake of any wine during our stay. 4. Our room (#22) had filthy doors, chips in the walls, and broken/worn blinds in one window. The shower walls and grouting could use a good scrub. The two wicker chairs were a joke--the seat bottoms were sagging so much that no seat cushions (and especially not the ones provided) could make them comfortable. We were never able to relax while sitting in our room. Total disappointment. 5. We could not use our in-room television because we could never sit comfortably in our room to watch. The Kirkwood Collection is doing a poor job maintaining this property. The Centrella deserves better than this, and so do its guests. We overpaid for a marginal stay at a marginal property--one that was previously well maintained and felt special. The current Centrella is neither. We would give this property a rating of 1 if it wasn't for the location, the lovely staff, the hot shower, and the daily housekeeping texts. We won't return or recommend this property. How sad! What a change!

Overpriced for the experience. It started with check in. Their machine declined several of my cards. They said it's just the machine, but didn't offer an alternive. Finally used a debt card. Bathroom was a jack and Jill that was smaller than my closet. Creative camera work on the web site I guess. The app based TV took a long time to figure out without any explanation or menu. Never could get a local station. The yogurt parfait "breakfast" was minimal. We ran out of body wash the first day. When I asked for more, I was told that they ran out and that I should use shampoo. WTF? I asked for the room to be serviced - never happened. At the price ($500+ a night), there are a lot better options available in the area.

We love staying in old hotels. Generally, a good stay. Lovely old building. Room #32 (third floor) had a view of the ocean, tucked into the back corner of the hotel. Crazy, noisy gulls from 0430 to 10 pm. We could see them through the skylight and on top of other roof tops. Very cute room with alot of space. We used screen provided to open windows. The sheets felt oddly very soft, not the usual crisp, clean linens like some places. There are a lot of stairs in this place. The first night was great. The second was terrible with loud noisy guests in the middle of the night. Running around on the floors below, a lady talking all night (background drone), an angry man pounding the door somewhere to tell the noise makers to quiet down. I had ear plugs and didn't hear a thing. My hubby was woken up several times by this chaos. I would stay here again. We don't mind not having the amenities of a new hotel. The place has a ton of character which we seek. Close to everything a plus. Service was fine. There is an emergency number to call if needed.
