OK, so this is one of many of my reviews that I do as a public service, not because I think the property is a stand-out one way or the other, but simply because the existing reviews are so outdated. Really frustrating that Tripadvisor still has this listed as "Quality Inn". I don't know how to change that. This review is for "Scottish Fairway Inn" - an incredibly annoying name to say the least; however, after staying in 3 different rooms here, I can give a meaningful update. Forget the super-negative Karens. Yes, it's a somewhat dated older property but it's not really run-down. They're feeding it just enough oxygen to keep it alive and useable. It looks like all the carpet was taken out and replaced with "luxury vinyl plank" or cheap laminate flooring about 5-10 years ago. And the flooring is kept clean - unfortunately, it was badly damaged in one room. Bed and bedding was just fine; OK TVs; a humorously antiquated heating system (electric wall base heaters!!!!); good micro + fridge + coffee. One thing I like about this place is it has more of a "regular" parking arrangement, unlikely so many of the wonky parking lots at the cheapies along Fremont and Munras. You can go in from one street, exit out onto another, and not get all jammed up with a poor lay-out. Also - outstanding freeway access, headed both south and north on highway 1. An odd thing about this place is that it's apparently run by some sort of property management or real estate company. In other words, its not run by an Indian family like 90% of the other hotels in Monterey. The employees were OK, but not surprisingly, disengaged or disinterested at times. They had a guy using super loud power tools while repairing a balcony on Easter morning! Huh? It's average lodging at best, but I'm gonna give it an extra star to off-set the ridiculous reviews that make it sound like a crack house.

Very disappointing experience. Poor facility and poor customer service. I a a Diamond member of Choice Hotels and guaranteed early check in. We arrive Monterey about 1:30 and I ask for early check in BUT was denied. Was not asked about my status or anything. When I questioned this I was simply told "it's our policy" meaning no check in until regular time. We were in Room two. We were unable to open the door to our unit and had to get assistance from the front desk each time. In the evening the desk person had to get his master key and then literally forced the door open as the lock did not fully engage. There was what appeared to be black mold (has to be verified by testing) along a foot or so on one wall and in the corner and along 3 - 4 inches of the caulking. Breakfast was very limited with nothing hot except breakfast burritos that could be microwaved. On check out there was no one around to report the issues to. Definitely NOT worth the price. Will not stay here again of we return to Monterey.

The good - Front office staff friendly & helpful - especially Jose. Housekeeping staff was excellent. Towels & beds changed frequently. The not so good - One queen bed was broken on one side (springs maybe?) and we were unable to use that side of the bed. One lamp switch was broken and could not be turned on. Inconsistent shower temperature - the water would turn icy cold or scald you in the middle of your shower. The bathroom fan did not work so it was always damp in the bathroom. The HOT breakfast consisted of frozen burritos you heated in a microwave - despite pictures of hot waffles & apples on the wall - none were to be had. There are at least 10 hotels in this same area. Do not go by the pictures on the website. They must have been professionally done.
