Stanley Hotel

The staff was terrific. A visit for photos is worth an hour , but don’t stay until construction is finished. You get more amenities at a quality inn. Chop house restaurant was very good.

The only reason I didn't give it a one was because the food was really good. We ate dinner at the Mcgregor Chophouse and it was delicious. I tried elk for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The wedge salad was probably the best I've ever had. My husband had the pork chop and it was juicy and flavorful!! Our waiter Joel was excellent and told us stories about the hotel. The breakfast in the Cascades restaurant was very good as well! Now for the not so good stuff. When we booked this hotel I had no idea that they had multiple places other than the main hotel built in 1909 where The Shining was filmed. Well they do. So make sure when you book you ask for the main hotel if you want it!! Ours was across the street, down a hill that my husband couldn't walk up, and not very comfortable. There is no parking. We had to park in the gravel overflow parking for the construction people( more later on that)! We found out we had a handicapped room so no tub, just a hand held shower head, no room to walk, no place to hang your clothes, and no chair to sit in. The bathroom was so small, no place to put your toiletries except on the floor, the room was so dark so bring a makeup mirror if you want to see your makeup! No mini fridge if you have medication that's needs to stay cold! The worst part of it all was the construction everywhere!! Apparently the state of Colorado bought the Stanley and is adding a huge arena for shows, more parking which they desperately need, and more rooms. The views are skewed by the heavy machinery and fences everywhere. When booking there was no knowledge of any construction. When we complained at checkout the nice lady said oh you should have told me! Well you weren't there and the chap who checked us in said that's all they had!! Just be careful when booking this hotel!!

We did The Shining Tour. It was so informative and we enjoyed every minute. We had the best guide ever. Unfortunately, I don’t remember his name (tall, blonde gentleman wth longer hair and an absolute 5**** personality.
