We booked the Hampton Inn Valdosta Conference Center despite the notice that renovations were underway. We've stayed at many hotels during renovations before, so we weren't concerned. Unfortunately, what we encountered was far beyond what most travelers would reasonably expect.
Upon arrival, we entered through the rear of the property and immediately noticed the swimming pool appeared unusable. There was a layer of scum floating on the water, no visible circulation, and the pool looked neglected. Assuming it was closed due to renovations, I asked at the front desk and was told the pool was open and unaffected by the construction. Several guests appeared interested in swimming but turned away after seeing its condition.
We were assigned what was described as a renovated room. However, the room appeared to still be in the middle of the renovation process. There was construction writing visible on the shower tile ("up," "stop here," etc.), and construction dust was present on multiple surfaces throughout the room.
The television was unplugged when we arrived. After plugging it in, we discovered it would not work. A maintenance employee spent approximately 20 minutes troubleshooting and was eventually able to get the TV to turn on, but neither he nor the hotel's master controller could get the volume to function properly. He was very apologetic and did his best, but we ultimately had to watch programs on our phones because the television was essentially unusable.
The next morning, before 8:00 a.m., we were awakened by extremely loud construction noise. What sounded like jackhammers outside the building and power saws inside made it impossible to continue sleeping. After a long day of travel the previous day, we had hoped to sleep in a bit, but instead we packed up and checked out early.
At checkout, I calmly informed the front desk agent—who appeared to be a manager—about the issues we experienced: the dusty room, the condition of the pool, the malfunctioning television, and the early construction noise. I was not asking for compensation and never mentioned a refund. I simply thought management would want to know about problems affecting guests.
To my surprise, the response was a stern reprimand: "I see you have a deeply discounted rate and I'm not going to give you any more off that rate."
I was genuinely shocked. It never occurred to me to request additional compensation. I was simply providing feedback that could help improve the experience for future guests.
The maintenance employee was courteous and professional, but the overall condition of the property and the response from management left a very negative impression. Given the number of lodging options in the Valdosta area, I would strongly encourage travelers to consider one of the many alternatives until the renovations are fully completed and guest concerns are taken more seriously.
