I rarely write negative reviews, but after staying at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, I feel obligated to share what happened to my family.
Several interactions with Hyatt staff contained what we perceived to be unmistakable hints of racial bias, culminating in conduct that left us feeling discriminated against, intimidated, and unwelcome because we are a South Asian (Indian) family. We chose Hyatt because of its reputation for hospitality, luxury, and inclusiveness. Instead, our experience left us questioning whether we were treated differently because of our ethnicity.
I have stayed at many Hyatt properties over the years because of the brand's reputation for hospitality, professionalism, and inclusiveness. I never imagined that one of my family's vacations would end with us experiencing racial discrimination, aggressive and intimidating behavior from Hyatt staff, and questioning whether we were treated differently because we are a South Asian (Indian) family.
This review is not about a minor customer-service issue or an employee having a bad day. It is about two separate incidents on consecutive days that, taken together, left our family feeling humiliated, unwelcome, and unsafe. While I cannot know the intent of the employees involved, I can describe exactly what happened, why we perceived elements of racial discrimination, and how Hyatt's handling of our complaint ultimately failed to provide meaningful accountability or closure.
I want to be clear that I cannot know with certainty what was in the minds of the employees involved. However, I can describe exactly what happened, what we personally witnessed, and why those events led us to believe that racial bias may have influenced how we were treated.
My hope in writing this review is that Hyatt uses this experience as an opportunity to improve so that no other family has to go through what ours did.
A Beautiful Resort Overshadowed by Staff Conduct
There is no denying that Hyatt Regency Maui is a beautiful property. The grounds are meticulously maintained, the pools are excellent for families, and the beachfront location is outstanding.
Unfortunately, beautiful landscaping cannot compensate for guests feeling unwelcome or unsafe.
What should have been an unforgettable family vacation became one of the most upsetting travel experiences my family has ever had.
We were traveling with our two young children. Like most parents, our focus was simply on spending quality time together and enjoying Maui. Instead, we found ourselves defending our right to be treated equally and later trying to de-escalate an aggressive confrontation with hotel staff while our children watched.
Incident #1 – Umalu Restaurant (June 23, approximately 4:30 PM)
After spending time at the pool, my wife, our children, and I walked directly to Umalu Restaurant for an early dinner.
When we arrived, the host informed us that we would not be allowed to dine in the restaurant unless we changed clothes. We were told our only option was to receive our food as a to-go order.
Immediately behind us was a white family waiting to be seated.
Unlike us, they were told something different—that guests simply needed to be dry—and they were permitted to dine in the restaurant.
This immediately caught our attention because we were already dry ourselves.
I politely explained that we met the same condition and asked that my family be treated the same way.
Despite this, the host continued preparing our order in to-go containers and repeatedly insisted that we leave with our food instead of dining in the restaurant.
Only after repeatedly objecting were we finally seated.
Even then, we were initially directed to seating on the edge of the restaurant, away from the main dining area. It was only after another discussion that we were finally seated alongside the other guests.
No family should have to repeatedly argue simply to receive equal service.
Whether this difference in treatment was intentional or not, seeing another family receive more favorable treatment under what appeared to be a different standard left us wondering whether our ethnicity played a role.
That feeling stayed with us for the remainder of our vacation.
Incident #2 – Aggressive and Intimidating Conduct by Valet Staff (June 24, approximately 5:30 PM)
The second incident was even more disturbing because it involved conduct that made my family feel unsafe.
After our vehicle was brought to the valet area, I was securing my children in their car seats while my wife sat in the front passenger seat.
Another guest's Cybertruck was blocking the resort exit, preventing traffic from moving.
I briefly honked once to indicate that the driveway was blocked.
Almost immediately, a valet employee aggressively approached my vehicle and said,
"You don't honk at me."
I calmly responded that the driveway was blocked and simply asked whether the vehicle could be moved so traffic could continue.
The employee immediately replied,
"You don't teach me how to do my job."
The tone was confrontational and unnecessarily aggressive.
My wife stepped out of the vehicle in an attempt to calm the situation before it escalated further.
During that exchange, the employee yelled,
"This is America!"
That statement was deeply disturbing.
I cannot know what the employee intended by those words.
However, spoken to my wife during an argument immediately after interacting with our visibly South Asian family, it felt targeted and exclusionary.
As an Indian family, we perceived it as suggesting that we were outsiders whose concerns were somehow less deserving of respect.
Unfortunately, what happened next only reinforced that perception.
A valet employee finally began moving the Cybertruck but proceeded to drive it extremely slowly, repeatedly stopping every few feet despite there being no apparent operational reason to do so.
Instead of helping resolve the situation, our departure was delayed even longer.
Meanwhile, several valet employees appeared to laugh, clap, and encourage what was happening.
My wife and young children witnessed the entire exchange.
As a parent, that was probably the most upsetting aspect of the experience.
Children should never have to watch hotel employees behaving aggressively toward their parents.
A luxury family resort should be one of the safest and most welcoming environments a family can visit.
Instead, we left the valet area feeling intimidated and deeply uncomfortable.
Why Safety Matters
As parents, we choose family resorts because we expect professionalism, courtesy, and safety.
Disagreements can happen anywhere.
However, there is a tremendous difference between resolving a disagreement professionally and aggressively confronting guests in front of their children.
Regardless of the reason for the disagreement, no guest should ever leave a luxury resort feeling intimidated by its employees.
The fact that my wife felt compelled to step out of the vehicle to de-escalate the situation says everything about how uncomfortable the interaction had become.
Hyatt's Response
Immediately after these incidents, I met with hotel management and later submitted a detailed written complaint to Hyatt's executive leadership.
My complaint requested:
• A formal investigation into both incidents.
• Preservation and review of surveillance footage before it could be overwritten.
• Interviews with the employees involved.
• A determination as to whether racial bias played any role.
• Appropriate corrective action and staff training.
To Hyatt's credit, management responded promptly.
They apologized sincerely and assured me that the allegations were being treated seriously.
However, because my family was checking out the following morning, I explained that waiting several days for an investigation would leave us without any answers.
I also pointed out that both incidents occurred in public areas, involved multiple employees, and should have been captured by security cameras.
From my perspective, these were not ambiguous incidents that occurred in private.
Despite this, Hyatt later informed me that it would not discuss its findings or any disciplinary action because those matters were confidential.
I understand the importance of protecting employee privacy.
However, from a guest's perspective, this meant we were simply asked to trust that something had been done.
We were never told whether Hyatt agreed with our account, whether our concerns were substantiated, whether employees received additional training, or what steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
For complaints involving possible discriminatory treatment and aggressive employee conduct, that lack of transparency left us feeling that there was no meaningful accountability.
Final Thoughts
The physical resort deserves praise.
The people who maintain the grounds, the housekeeping staff, and many other employees contributed positively to our stay.
Unfortunately, hospitality is ultimately defined by how guests are treated.
When a family leaves feeling humiliated, intimidated, and questioning whether they were treated differently because of their ethnicity, beautiful facilities become secondary.
We will remember this vacation not for the pools or the ocean views, but for having to repeatedly defend our right to be treated equally, for watching our children witness an unnecessary confrontation, and for leaving without meaningful answers despite repeatedly asking Hyatt for transparency.
I sincerely hope Hyatt Regency Maui and Hyatt Hotels Corporation treat experiences like ours as opportunities to improve. Every guest—regardless of race, ethnicity, or national origin—deserves to feel welcomed, respected, safe, and valued.
Unfortunately, that was not our experience.
I hope no other family has to leave this resort with the same feelings that ours did.
