Academy Bed & Breakfast

This is NOT a “luxury” hotel by any stretch. The rooms are nicely appointed but that’s it. Most importantly, the rooms do not have individual thermostats, just central air that you cannot control. My room was freezing and calls to the ‘concierge’ didn’t help. Unable to sleep at 12:30 I called to get an extra blanket but there was no staff on site. This seems to be consistent problem as other guests have complained of 80deg rooms. Further, despite the website advertising breakfast and cable tv, it has neither. They provide streaming service but it wasn’t working when I checked in and it took more than an hour to get it fixed. The website shows a lovely breakfast of avocado toast, hard boiled eggs and yogurt cups but they just offer some mini muffins and cake, no protein. When I raised that the website advertised these things, I was told they were sorry the hotel didn’t meet my expectations - as if they were unreasonable, not what’s on the website. Most importantly, a “luxury” hotel has professional, experienced and accommodating staff that address shortcomings but the staff here are not and when the hotel failed to be as advertised, staff acted as if this was my problem, not theirs. After i posted this review on Google, the hotel responded by saying it was speaking to legal counsel (!) good luck with that. So be warned, if you have a bad experience and post about it, the hotel management will try to threaten legal action.

An amazing boutique hotel property right in the heart of the action in Annapolis. The interior design and level of service are world-class. This is one of the nicest places I have ever stayed in.

We paid $800 for the basement level Garden Suite. The bed was comfortable and the linens top notch. The large red commercial grade EXIT signs placed throughout detract from the decor and we would recommend only taking the outside access stairs to the basement: the stairs inside the house are steep and narrow. We were greeted by Mary Elle, who told us to “text” if we needed something — “staff is available 24x7.” On 5 occasions we tried to reach someone via text or phone: 1- Problem with YouTube TV (resolved) 2- Thermostat issue (response received 1 hour later) 3- Phonograph issue (no response) 4- No water in suite call to front desk (“voicemail box is full”) 5- No water in suite text (no response) We expected to have bottled drinking water provided in our room -not so. There was, however, running water from the rooms upstairs that we heard every time the toilet was flushed, etc. In addition, and while we understand this is an old property, we were kept awake by the constant movements of feet from the rooms upstairs. Breakfast was across the street and took a very long time to be served, as it included guests not just from 134 Prince but the owner’s other B’n’B. Natalie was kind and managed to locate a frother to make cappuccinos, whereas we were initially advised that only a Nespresso machine was available: a dealbreaker for a “luxury boutique hotel.” Janelle was friendly and in a constant state of motion between the kitchen and inn dining area but the co-mingling of all residents from the inn and hotel was awkward at best. This is not a hotel. The location is great but you are a long way from meeting that “lofty, yet simple goal” referenced in your welcome letter. Was the value-for-money worth it? No. Angela T.
