My room was old and worn out. Then window was open and a/c running when I checked in - diffusing the urine smell that became very apparent after closing the window. I thought keeping the window open might help but there was no screen and the next day the smell outside the motel was almost as bad as in the room (chicken farm nearby?). Other oddities that I have not seen at a motel in a long time, or ever - the room's smoke detector was covered with a plastic bag, exterior hallway doors were never locked, a dog that seemed to belong to an employee roamed the lobby freely. On the positive side the motel is convenient to the freeway and had plenty of free parking.

Nicotine. The whole place smells like nicotine. Every hallway and the room. Don’t pull the curtains back, you’ll release that old nicotine that’s been hiding there for years. Front desk is nice. Everything looked clean but it can only be so clean when covered in nicotine.

I went on a solo trip to Ionia over a weekend at the end of January (into beginning of February) 2026 and spent a Saturday night at this Super 8. I'd driven past this Super 8 many times along I-96 over the years but had never had a reason to stay here. Well, I finally had that reason as part of my solo trip. It's about 7 miles south of town. I arrived early in the afternoon on the Saturday. My check-in experience was so-so (unfortunately, there was a mixup with the room I was originally assigned to because it hadn't been made up yet). The room that I eventually was assigned to (#221) was comfortable enough. The cleanliness was average but it was acceptable. One thing, though, was that the shower/bathtub was extremely slippery. I didn't have any issues, but someone could easily slip and fall in there. I can't speak to any of the amenities because I didn't take advantage of them (I had breakfast elsewhere, for instance). But overall, I slept quite well for the night. I didn't have very high expectations going into my stay because it was a Super 8, but the review spread on TripAdvisor was fairly positive so I figured I'd give it a shot. I didn't regret it in any way; it adequately served its purpose for a night.
