Econo Lodge Downtown

I don't normally write reviews, let alone long ones, but our experience here was so... singular that I feel compelled to do so. Let me start from the beginning of our experience. First impressions? Not great. The sign for the hotel is shattered, so if we weren't using Google Maps, we wouldn't have known that's where we were. The building has tons of paint touch-ups on the outside that are in the wrong color of paint, adding to the shabby appearance of the exterior. However, we could see that they were doing some construction, so despite our hesitance, we decided to head inside. We went to check in, and we were immediately met with someone (an owner or manager, perhaps?) telling the presumed employee that was checking us in that they needed to broaden their cultural experiences. This indicated a positive environment, I love seeing people giving each other a good natured hard time. We were given our room keys... And that's when the positive experience ended. Our room was on the second floor, so we knew we'd have to be climbing the stairs, as we could see the elevator was out of order. (Side note: The elevator does work. We noticed staff using it later.) The stairs we had to use were in the back of the building, which meant we had to go down a full two hallways to get to the stairs, then double back once we got upstairs to get to our room. (Remember this, it'll be important.) As we make our way down the hallways, we see an abundance of shabby looking signs telling people not to leave their trash in the hallways. Not a great sign of a good hotel, but hey, I'm an optimist. Each room has a "No smoking" sign on the door, which is odd, because once you make your way beyond the lobby, you're hit with a freight train of cigarette smoke and weed smoke smells. (I thought at first that would be an anomaly. Can't make everyone follow the rules, right? I was wrong, the smell is constant.) Making our way up the stairs was interesting. It looked like they hadn't been vacuumed in days, which was partially confirmed by the mostly-smoked joint that was left on the stairs. We get to our room, tired, and that's when the experience got even more interesting. We set our things down, and that's when I noticed something that made me laugh. It's a gripe, I suppose, but the art on our wall was directly taken from a Super8. How do I know that? The Super8 watermark was still in the lower right corner. A cursory glance around the room showed us how sketchy our stay would be. One of the light fixtures in the wall was basically just ripped out and left loose. The light fixtures that WERE there were dirty and shabby. Still, we're not super picky folks. An inspection of the bathroom revealed a pretty gross shower, it's clear nobody gave that bathroom a thorough cleaning in weeks. As a side note, the sink backed up too, but honestly, the bathroom itself worked pretty well. The toilet flushes with an intensity that is hard to understand until you've heard it. Side note: The rolling barn door can be a charming way to add an accent to a functional feature. What's the one room that needs an actual door that latches and locks, and shuts fully? The bathroom. What's the room they used a sliding barn door on? The bathroom. Not only was it weird, but the barn door routinely slides off the rails if you're not too careful, forcing you to struggle to move the door back on to the rail from inside, or whine for help from the inside like an impotent toddler until the traveling companion of your choice can fix it from the outside. When we returned to the hotel later that night, we noticed one of my biggest problems: The duvet had a cigarette burn on the outside of it. After contemplating for a few moments, we decided we would probably be able to live with it until morning. When we pulled back the duvet, I noticed that ALL of our bedding had cigarette burns in various areas. At this point, I decided to use the room phone to call down to the front desk to ask for replacements. You know, the phone all hotel rooms have had since, like, the 80's? I looked high and low, and couldn't find a phone. I DID find a phone LINE, but no phone to accompany it. At that point, we decided we were tired and would deal with it and get new linens the next day, since it wasn't worth the winding walk downstairs when it was super late at night. The hotel's policy is that if you want linens replaced, the old ones need to be left in the hallway, and then you'll be provided with new ones. This struck me as odd, but whatever. We did as instructed. Later that day, we found out what might be my favorite thing about this hotel: they appear to only have EXACTLY enough linens for the number of rooms that they have. No joke, we had to wait and get our linens one by one, waiting for stuff to dry. I would think they'd have enough to have full rotations throughout the rooms, but whatever. Another point: We had to go down multiple times to pick up our linens, and were led each time to their laundry area, because nobody could, apparently, be bothered to bring them up to our room. (There's a sign that says it's because of COVID, but considering I didn't see any of the staff wearing masks, so I highly doubt that. Our second set of bed linens (and the mattress underneath) had a few mysterious stains, but at this point we thought "At least there aren't holes in these, so whatever." At one point I had to move the dresser because something fell behind it, and discovered it hadn't been cleaned under in a LONG time. It was FILTHY. Also of note, the door keys stopped working 3 times in the span of 5 days. On the whole, this hotel was pretty terrible. I mean, for my partner and I, it'll be a joke that we reference a lot, one of those, "Remember that god-awful hotel we stayed at" kind of things. For that, it's great, but we would have preferred to just have a good experience. On the plus side, the air conditioner works. 1 star for that.

Never stay at this hotel the absolute worst hotel experience at 2:10 this morning my 8 year old son and I had our bags and left walking because we didn’t have a vehicle because this sketchy hotel had it towed. This hotel is beyond sketchy do not stay there pics on website are no where near what you need to expect people trying to look under our door, screams scratching on the wall no one working there at all last night and have tried calling 15 times today with no answer yet to cancel reservations.

My husband booked a room here for the CWS- the room conditions were deplorable. Broken curtain rods, frozen food in the fridge, bed not made - overall, it was disgusting. Carpets were filthy. And he couldn’t get in to his “boutique” room until after 1 am….
