Quality Inn

I've been staying at the St. Lawrence Hotel (formerly the Sub-Quality Inn, and trust me, the “sub-quality” part still fits) consistently for years while traveling for work because of its location. And when it comes to pros... well, that's pretty much it. The location. End of list. Once you get past the substandard cleanliness and the Wi-Fi that barely competes with dial-up, you’ll notice something truly special: you cannot control the temperature in your room. That thermostat on the wall? Purely decorative. I've had multiple sleepless nights either sweating through their scratchy, suspiciously stained sheets, or freezing like I'm bunking down in a meat locker. There is no in-between. Guest comfort? Apparently not in the business plan. Plumbing? Hit or miss. I’ve had toilets back up for no reason, always a fun surprise. And let’s not forget the parking lot, where I continue to dodge the same crater-sized potholes that have been there for over a decade. At this point, they’re practically historical landmarks. Even better, for reasons unknown to logic or hospitality standards, the motel allows permanent residents (along with their barking dogs, who provide a charming soundtrack at all hours of the night) to live there. Yes, live. As in, this is their address. The owner of this motel should be absolutely embarrassed by the total lack of care or effort put into this place. It’s clear there’s no interest in guest experience or even basic upkeep. Meanwhile, several local businesses in Massena are actively working to revitalize and improve their storefronts and bring some life back to the community. Maybe the owner of the St. Lawrence Hotel should take a cue (or ten) from them on how to run a business or at least pretend to care. Until then, I’ll be counting down the days until a better option moves in.

Our stay was ridiculous, first off checking in is stressful because of the door alarm going off the whole time I was trying to speak!! I prepaid for the room and even though I had my receipt she said it was only a hold and and proceeded to charge me again, once we got to the room we immediately realized it was not the suite shown in the photo, when we went back to the front desk to share my frustration I was told that room was already rented and we could keep the room we got or go elsewhere that she couldn't do anything (not to mention we were 3hrs away from home) there was absolutely no care, compassion or empathy. We didn't have a choice but to stay because we were not gonna turn around and drive 3 hours home that time of night. About fifteen minutes later, the front desk called and apologized for the miscommunication, and said for all our troubles that the next time we are in the area that they would let us stay in the room we originally paid to rent free of charge. I appreciate that but then checking out i was then told about the double charge and that they refunded that to me, but.... they only refunded part of the extra charge so I still paid almost double the price to stay in a room we didn't even choose, and to add to all the stress my attempts to get a response as to what night the room will be available for our free stay has been ignored for weeks now!

No longer a Quality Inn, this hotel continues to hide behind the good reputation of former ownership. The St. Lawrence Hotel features inoperative equipment, inconsistent pricing, unfriendly management and a combination of permanent housing with paying short term guests. On the plus side, there are washers and dryers that are free to use, free parking, free breakfast and a convenient location in the town center. Do not be fooled by the attractive lobby and the Quality Inn signage and branding. This independent property is not up to the standards of Choice Hotels (and I do not know why the corporation tolerates the ongoing use of its name.) If you do stay there, check your charges daily.
