Overall, the Renaissance Columbus Downtown Hotel was a little lackluster for me. It’s clearly an older hotel that has had some updates, and there are definitely things they’ve done really well, but other areas still feel dated and a little run down. One thing I noticed immediately was how great the hotel smelled, and some of the renovated areas look really nice. It just doesn’t feel consistent throughout the property.
The rooftop pool on the fourth floor is a great feature, especially with the hot tub. It was a popular area during our stay, and quite a few people were ordering food and drinks from the restaurant, which all looked good. The prices seemed a little high in my opinion, though. The pool area could also use more chairs. There was a game area nearby that stayed mostly empty, and it seemed like some of that space could be better utilized for additional seating.
The gym was actually a pleasant surprise. It has a Peloton bike, treadmills, weights, and a decent selection of equipment. I also really liked that they kept the sauna. You don’t see saunas in hotel gyms nearly as often anymore, so that was a nice feature.
The biggest disappointment was the valet experience. Parking is essentially something you’re forced to pay for, so I expected the service to be much better. The valet was incredibly slow, and the staff experience overall was not great. When you’re paying a premium for parking, the service should feel convenient, not like an additional frustration.
Overall, it wasn’t a bad stay, but it wasn’t particularly impressive either. There are some genuinely nice amenities and you can see where improvements have been made, but the hotel still needs attention to the smaller details and some of the older areas. With more consistency in the updates, better upkeep around the pool, and a much stronger valet experience, it could be a really nice downtown hotel. As it stands, it was just okay for me.
