Melville House

We had booked the Melville House for Sunday of Labor Day weekend. I had booked through Expedia and had reserved a Queen Room that said private bath. When we arrived on Sunday afternoon Rick, was waiting outside to help with check in as it it a small one way road with a lot of traffic. He met us at our car and told us to wait for a minute because he owed someone an “upgrade” and wanted to check if it was us. He came back out a few minutes later very enthusiastic and telling us that we booked a small room without a bathroom so he was upgrading us to a much bigger room with a private bath. I was already questioning this as I knew that I had booked a room with a bathroom. He continued to tell us that he was going to give us a deal and this better room would cost us less money. We didn’t really understand what was going on and wanted to get on with our day so we agreed. That’s when it went downhill. He then proceeded to tell us that we would have to cancel our Expedia reservation with him and pay the new hotel directly. He then kind of told us where to go. The new hotel was three blocks further away from where we originally booked so it was going to make for a long walk, not a location that I would ever knowingly book. We got to the new hotel and they were confused by the situation. In talking to them it seems like the Melville House overbooks rooms and then calls around Newport to see where they can put people. This was no upgrade, just a bait and switch to a worse location and worse room that ended up costing us more money. I also had to spend about an hour on the phone with Expedia to get my money refunded because I had booked a non refundable room at the Melville House. I will never book another property on Clarke Street!. He also knew what he was doing having us cancel, it was on me to resolve with Expedia and I am not able to leave a review there. In hindsight I should have read more reviews because it seems like there have been many people of the years who have also been victims of this scam at the Melville House.

SCAM SCAM SCAM, was charged $289.00 Service fee, couldn't cancel, no phone number to call. DO NOT STAY Here. Tried calling the inn next store, TOTAL SCAM I thought I was booking through Bookings, but it wasn't, called the Newport Police and am out about $900.00

If you were looking for a quiet night sleep, this is not the property to rent Between the creaking floors and the paper thin walls you can hear every conversation that every guest has for as long as they decide to stay up late at night and talk on the phone, some using a speaker phone so you can have the privilege of following both sides of the conversation There is no observed quiet time ….manager should perhaps post a sign in the hallways that says to respect your neighbor and that after 10 PM please be considerate of your neighbors Instead; groups of people will rent different rooms and then run back-and-forth between them and also talk loudly at night. They have also been visited by the police to attempt to resolve conflicts between guests trying to sleep and guests looking to stay awake after 11 PM on weekdays Spend the extra money for a better-rated accommodation
