Rancho Viejo Resort and Country Club

I have had two very different experiences at the same Rancho Viejo Golf resort hotel and I don't know quite what to do as it is my son's favorite place. The first time, in February last year, was excellent to the point that we recommend it to other families. However, this time - August 2025 - it went pretty badly, it was just us and a couple of friends. The manager put a lot of problems on us, like: -Not allow us to eat a birthday cake or pay uncork for the 2 bottles of champagne. When we arrived at the same check in we asked him and the norm was a resounding and immovable no. -We were charged 900 mxn more than agreed by the dogs and almost do not let us stay because -despite putting a fee for bringing pet that we pay on the website- they do not let bring more than one-thing that no one mentioned when booking. They told us about the chocolates they gave us for the campfire... it was pretty ridiculous. -Our horseback riding tour for the kids was cancelled twice due to miscommunications between the staff-and we left without doing so. The manager seemed not to want us there, used the rules not to help but to prevent us from coming back. -I have to say that the breakfast staff was lovely and quite the opposite to the manager, the gardening is very cared for and the cleanliness is excellent. Despite spending a lot on the hotel (13,000 mxn on food and 7000 on accommodation + pet fee etc), the experience was very bad. I don’t want to burn them with a review and I want to come back because my son loves that place but I feel very sorry that he is manager is doing everything so wrong... my son wants to celebrate his birthday there, I told him that if he could rent half the cabins (11 in total) and that if they discounted per group, and he told me that he didn’t believe at least 30 cabins when there are only 22 on the property.... We literally feel like they don't want people...

Our three grandkids joined us in a two bedroom king suite. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are convenient to the restaurant and golf course. The resort pool was 5 minutes away. The staff of the resort are wonderful. We prefer the resort's diner for breakfast over the included minimal buffet. Also the resort needs a fresh coat of paint and a business center. Stay at Ranch Viejo Resort when in Brownsville, you won't be disappointed.

The white old guy (Golf Pro) was condescending and downright rude. The rest of the staff seemed nice enough. Course was in crummy shape. But it's southern Texas and very dry and hot. There are much better options in the valley. Stay away from Rancho Viejo unless you like paying too much and being treated like a 2nd class citizen.
