Holiday Inn San Antonio Downtownmarket Square

Sadly, this property is permanently closed, and the facility leased to the city for a homeless shelter. I will certainly miss free parking with my room, and one of the last anywhere that looks like Holiday Inn back in the Kemmons Wilson era, when they were on top.

We stayed 3 days for my son's BMT graduation. I'd like to start with the gentleman at the front desk was extremely nice and helpful...which was refreshing after traveling/flying all day with a 9month old. Lobby was pretty and clean. Parking lot was average. Our room was lacking. To start we couldn't get the door open. Had to leave my exhausted daughter, 9 month old grandson, and our luggage, outside the room and walk back to the lobby for help. He dropped everything and came to help. Upon entering, the room smelled extremely musty, but was clean-ish. The bathroom definitely needs help. The shower was very dirty. Growing slimy mold around the hand rail and soap holder. There was dirt and dust around the feet of the sink vanity. No stopper in the sink. Thankfully the beds and linens were clean. The floor looked vacuumed. But had to wash EVERYTHING, even clean clothes, when we got home. Everything smelled moldy. I've stayed in Holiday Inns several times and have always been pleased. Which is why I chose your hotel. Not 100% sure I'd stay again. Think I'd rather pay a bit more to avoid coming home smelling like mold.

This place takes me WAY back to the way Holiday Inn looked when I was a kid. It was opened just after Hemisfair, and the cornerstone on the building indicates it was their store #1000. It’s obviously old, but they have done a pretty fair job keeping things up to standards. They still have a dining room and bar open for breakfast and dinner, and one can buy breakfast for $5 when purchased at the time of reservation. For some reason the rooms are exceptionally humid, but they have provided dehumidifiers in the rooms for those that want them. There was no hand soap, or any soap in the lavatory, which I found to be odd. The beds, sheets, towels, carpet and furniture were all in good condition. Their desk staff was accommodating and helpful over my 4-day stay. I kept locking myself out, but they managed to be patient with me about that. This place has no-charge parking which is a rare item in downtown SA. The neighborhood seems to be good enough, and you are not on the riverwalk but plenty close enough to walk it. I was surprised to learn this inn opened just after Hemisfair ‘68, which was SA’s big deal of the century. The property looks like a Kemmons Wilson property that has been properly maintained and kept up to standards. They had a beautiful pool and hot tub area in the center of a box-shaped 4-story building of sleeping rooms. They also have space for small meetings, etc. The location serves the government buildings (across the freeway West) better than the riverwalk, but provides easy access to both. The rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows which once opened to the outside. I can only guess security has required they screw them shut, but whatever the case they don't open. It brings a lot of welcome light into the room. I found the lighting in the rooms to be lacking, and they have used an unusual type of light bulb leaving me unable to use the regular bulbs I always bring with me. I would recommend them, and I will likely be back, largely due to free parking, as there is a huge amount of competition in this area, but almost none offer a free place for your automobile.
