Nitmiluk Chalets

Really looked forward to visiting Nitmiluk having experienced the local hospitality at Kalbarri, Karanjini and Kakadu. Sadly our accommodation (a 2 bedroom cabin) was disappointing in terms of cleanliness and size given the cost for 3 nights (in excess of $1600). Yes, I understand it is a remote area but in comparison to our stay at Kakadu ((Hawk Dreaming) which is also extremely remote, Nitmiluk cabins is not value for money. The tiny bathroom in our 2 bedroom resulted in 2 of the 4 of us electing to use the public facilities. What is worth the visit - apart from the amazing gorges - is the staff that provide the engine room for this facility. They are amazing, often working under extreme pressure - for example the one cook and one service staff member at the pool bar and bistro. The night we arrived and ate there they were pumped yet still had smiles on their faces and even apologised for delays in service. They had no need to apologise. They worked extremely hard and delivered consistent quality. What they do need is at least one more person helping out in the kitchen. If it had not been for staff professionalism I would have only given 2 stars. Cabin and public facility refurbishment would make this site much more appealing.

Amenities were old, dated ,dirty & lacked ongoing maintenance . Ladies - shower rose taped on & bad pressure .Toilet doors x 2 missing locks & one door nearly fell off . Clothes line - whole section unusable - as staff buggy had run into it the previous evening ( witnessed) & they did not fix as promised. Camp sites - powered - far too close together - cannot even peg out awning on own sites!! Pool area- nice size - but garden could do with TLC& bar rather overpriced. Close to boat trip & walks - but a day trip from Katherine would still work . Sorry to be so negative - but for $70 night not much offering considering the hype you tend to publicize

Stayed at one of the cabins for two nights. We paid about $350 per night. For that, you get a home base with a kitchenette, very close to Nitmiluk Gorge: that's the upside. The downside is that the cabin was overstocked with ants. They were in the beds, the bathroom, the towels, the kitchenette - basically everywhere except the fridge and freezer. Thank goodness for the fridge and freezer. The aircon was hit and miss depending on the room. Would I stay here again? No, but it was awfully close to Nitmiluk Gorge.
