Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier

Good location, nice breakfast. Rooms are a bit tired but overall quite adequate.

First, hotel was clean and good location. But our room was unacceptable. It was a 300-level room, so we took elevator to floor 3 (fourth floor for us Americans), only to find that we had to climb 22 stairs (with big luggage!) to get to our room. It was actually on the floor above, in a section where you could not get to going to floor 4 on elevators. Strike one. Then, the room was under the roof line, so half of the room had a severe slope, making it unusable! And the room was already fairly small. I had the pleasure of banging my head hard against this slope more than once. Just for fun, the shower was located under the slope, almost impossible to use - not only for me at 6'4", but even for my 5'3" wife. Really? I wonder how many of their rooms are like this? We reserved a standard room, so I expected a queen bed. Instead, we got two twins separated by 5 inches, shoved against opposite walls (did I mention the room was small?). They each had no topsheet, just a duvet (typical of Europe hotels) that barely covered the bed - so you couldn't keep it on at night. I went straight down to the desk, but they didn't care. Maybe it was because we booked thru a third party. Also: the a/c adjustment didn't work. No matter was setting, didn't seem to change the temp. The safe batteries were low, so the safe didn't work. And the shower door seal didn't seal, so our hunched-over shower caused big puddles on the floor. Thus, a rating of 1.

I often visit Vienna, but this was my first stay at Mercure Biedermeier, mainly because the prices were quite competitive. Unfortunately, my experience was rather mixed — neither particularly memorable nor catastrophic. On the positive side: - The hotel is located in the picturesque and quiet Sünnhof Passage. - The staff, both at reception and during breakfast, were welcoming and helpful. - I chose the room in the category “Classic Double Room”. It was comfortable, and I slept perfectly well. However, the bed mattress is quite thin, so guests accustomed to thicker mattress may find it less comfortable. - The breakfast buffet is generous and offers a good selection of products. However, on the downside: - More attention to detail is definitely needed. The battery cover on the TV remote was partly broken, causing the batteries to keep sliding out. One of the lamps on the writing desk also appeared to have a faulty connection: it kept flickering and was therefore unusable. - Housekeeping was inconsistent. One morning, I left the used towels, an empty toilet-roll tube, and an empty tissue box on the floor to indicate that they needed to be replaced. When I returned to my room, the towels had been replaced, but neither the tissue box nor the toilet paper had been replenished. None of these issues is particularly major on its own, but together they give the impression that some details are being overlooked. Given the competitive price, I would not consider the experience a disaster, but I would probably look at other options on my next visit to Vienna.
