Palace Hotel 5A

Unfortunately, the hotel had cat, in addition to the fact that the towel they provided me was thin and tiny, compared to one of face, in addition to the bad room situation, with poor cleanliness, sheets and curtains worn and a noisy old air conditioner that didn't freeze,out of shower that didn't work. Wardrobe is broken desk, hotel was decaying and the worst was yet to come, power cut off, guess why? I had a cat and didn't pay the bills, forcing me to change a hotel, no more. It is not worth a little stay in this hotel, I was thankful because it was the only one available and thank God, then changed. Get out of this place.

Just stayed here for WorldCup- $300 a night, hair in the beds, sticky floor, cockroaches in the hall, guy with a megaphone outside our window, huge gap between ceiling/wall and the window… you can only imagine the bathroom. Considering I just did a budget trip to Thailand and stayed in hostels, I am pretty tolerant of accommodations. DO NOT stay here.

We were here in September 2013. Palace Hotel 5A is definitely a dive, not very clean, exposed wires hanging out of the wall, we actually got a jolt from the electric shower head. Bathroom is tiny, barely more than what you might find in a small camper on the back of a pickup truck. There is no safe in the room. Staff does not speak any english. The A/C in the room was barely functional but function it did. When you check in they give you a key on a rectangular key fob. The fob has a pocket on the wall just inside the room and triggers a switch that turns your electricity on. I'm sure the idea is to conserve energy when travelers are out of the room but the wary traveler will easily defeat this by simply removing the key from the fob so that you can leave the A/C on to cool the room while you're out. The door key did not fit the lock properly and had to be wiggled back and forth, up and down, in and out. I could have picked the lock quicker with a paperclip or a hairpin. Guessing it was not the correct key for the lock but, like the A/C, somewhat functional. We were warned that this area was not safe after dark but we were undaunted by the more "colorful" areas of Manaus and actually found it to be safe enough for our liking. Located next to a main bus terminal, lots of activity all hours, day and night. Very good location if you enjoy the street life particularly after dark but probably best to travel in pairs at least if not small groups. Lots to do and see only a short walk away. We didn't bother with the free breakfast as we found the street food in Manaus to be some of the best on the planet. Lots of bums but none seemed overly aggressive or dangerous. I wouldn't say here again unless it was really, really cheap. Not a good deal for what we spent. Not very secure, don't leave anything of value in the room. Very noisy, bring ear plugs and/or sleep meds.
