I recently returned to InterContinental São Paulo after several stays over the years.
My relationship with this hotel has always been marked by contradictory perceptions. On some occasions I experienced relevant and unacceptable flaws of management and service, but I continue to return for attributes that remain very strong: the excellent location in Alameda Santos, the good gastronomy, spacious rooms and the convenience of a consolidated operation in one of the most strategic areas of the city for me in São Paulo.
In this lodging, I noticed a clear evolution in the attention to the guest. The reception was more consistent, there was efficiency in the daily replenishment of mineral water, amenities and governance services demonstrated greater care compared to previous experiences. These are details that may seem small, but that directly influence the perception of hospitality in premium segments.
The general impression is that the management, possibly renovated or recycled appropriately, has turned more attention to the most important asset of any hotel: the guest.
On the other hand, some physical elements of the property already show clear signs of wear and tear for a brand positioned in the IHG luxury segment.
The pool area is the most obvious example. In addition to transmitting a dated aesthetic, some aspects of maintenance and conservation reduce the perception of space quality with obvious material pathologies and no services for this particular area. The area needs a renovation capable of aligning its presentation with the expected standard of an IHG InterContinental.
The same happens in the corridors of the floors. The carpets present noticeable stains and wear, conveying the feeling of a useful life near the limit or even beyond the material's useful life. Do not compromise the functionality, but affect the visual experience and the perception of conservation of the property, my clever look of architect and the sharp sensitivity of French and Italian luxury schools captured naturally at check-in.
The main contrast of this accommodation was this: while hospitality shows an evolution, part of the infrastructure seems to move at a slower pace.
I still consider InterContinental São Paulo and others in the same region a relevant option in the city, especially for those who value location and gastronomy. However, I believe that investments in renewal and updating some common areas would be important for the physical experience to follow the evolution observed in services.
It was undoubtedly a better accommodation than some of my previous experiences. The advances in the service were noticeable and needed only a few effective adjustments to the value of the asset . Now, the challenge seems to be less in hospitality and more in preserving the physical assets that sustain the brand’s value proposition.
