Sandman Hotel and Suites Calgary West

This was our first stay at the Sandman chain, and will definitely be our last. Here’s why: We booked a bed and breakfast room rate, which was supposed to give us $20 credit per person in their Denny’s restaurant. Every day we had to go to the front desk for our breakfast voucher, and every day it was written in the amount of $40 even though I showed them the reservation, which clearly stated we had booked for three adults. Much difficulty getting it changed to the correct amount every day, they kept having to “talk to a manager”, who was never available. When we checked out, they tried to charge us over $100 more than the reserved rate. Luckily I was checking the bill, and when I pointed out the error they reversed it to the agreed rate. After we left, they billed us for $71 of charges in their restaurant, even though we settled our bill in full every day before leaving the restaurant. They did not remove the charge even though I pointed out that it was clearly an error. One error I would have shrugged off as, well, no one’s perfect and mistakes happen. Three errors in their favour in a single visit makes me think that the staff are either completely incompetent or outright crooks.

This was one of the worst hotels we ever stayed at. Room was 31 degrees celsius. A/C blowing hot air even at the lowest setting. Asked the front desk for assistance and told maintenance personal would be starting in 30 minutes (6pm). Waited till 7:30 and again ask front desk where he was. We were told he had to attend a funeral. Really? I asked why I wasn't notified and was met with a sheepish shrug. I demanded a new room which was on a different floor so we had to pack up and unpack again. Not great for seniors with mobility issues. Other problems were out of order vending machines, room cards that had to be reactivated, paint smell due to renovations, out of order pool and hottub and no continental breakfast for the 3 days we were there. With all the choices in Calgary, please go elsewhere.

We stayed at the Sandman Hotel in West Calgary and had a pretty terrible experience. The pillows were way too thick and overstuffed, and all of us woke up with sore necks. The room was hot and stuffy, and the air conditioning kept turning off and on, which made it really uncomfortable, especially with the heat outside. We were also really disappointed to find out the pool was closed for maintenance. No one told us in advance. When we asked at the front desk, they said we could use the pool at another Sandman location. We drove to the Sandman Downtown as they suggested, but were turned away when we got there. It felt like no one had the right information and we were left scrambling. Honestly, I do not have anything good to say about this stay. It was uncomfortable and frustrating from beginning to end. I would not go back.
