Shunyi

When I got to the hotel my reservation via booking.com was lost which meant I needed to be overcharged. The room smelled, couldn't take a shower as it was all too dirty and the staff was positively unhelpful. Only good thing was the taxi they called me which brought me to the airport on the meter so no haggling was necessary.

We (about 100 british people) stayed here for 2 weeks whilst on a TEFL training course. We all generally thought it was fine, it was a nice hotel and comfortable with a nice lobby. We were given tokens for a breakfast and lunch buffet everyday, but the food wasn't great at all. Apparently the Korean restaurant next door was good but we couldn't use them there. There is a mall on the opposite side if you cross and turn right which was convenient. Many western and chinese restaurants are nearby. The hotel is far out of Beijing, it's right at the end of one of the subway lines (in the top right corner) and getting into the centre of Beijing took at least an hour, more if you needed to change lines. We got taxis a few times but that is expensive. The staff seemed nice, but spoke no English so it could be a bit of a struggle. They had free wifi, but it was pretty bad. We could only seem to get signal in the lobby, in the rooms it was patchy and weak if you could even get it at all, but they did have ethernet cables in the rooms which mostly worked fine. The rooms were really nice, standard for a nice Chinese hotel but I've stayed in much worse in China, Shunyi is a nice place. They were a good size, clean and with everything you'd ever need. The beds were a little hard but that's very normal for China and it would be difficult to find soft beds like we are used to in the west.

I booked the hotel through a travel-website and the money was taken from me in euros. So no problem with the payment. On arrival I was aked to pay 200 RMBs (​1 Euro = around 8 RMB​) and I was surprised. Later it turns out that it was just a deposit. It was a big trouble as nobody spoke a word of english. Somehow we checked in! The rooms have a very typical chinese smell which I personally found repulsive, as I expect a neutral smell. The bathroom smelled of sewage water and everytime somebody in neighbour room flushed, the cocktail is stirred and the "fragrance" spread to our rooms. The curtains in bathroom were also not clean. The rooms were quite ok in terms of facilities. Internet speed was ok. The room was tidied well everyday. The TV has only chinese and korean channels. No international or english channels. I prefer hot water for bath but the water was just warm. In warmer days, I got warmer water. In colder days, ofcourse the water is less warm. I suspect some solar panels are involved in the mischief. Again the problem is that I cannot complain to the staff because of poor chinese language skills. I did not take breakfast here. In the evenings there is a korean buffet for around 35 RMB and I found it quite good. There are supermarkets, kfc and some pizza outlets near the hotel. Another thing I found really useful was a small shop in the hotel, where you buy some water (6 RMB), beer (even German!) or snacks. They also sell coffee, but it sucks anyway in China. Shunyi railway station is directly next to the hotel. If somebody fancies a trip to Beijing city. In my opinion, this hotel is definitely not suitable for european visitors. For the locals, it can be a average standard hotel. ​
