One of the better hotels downtown Zhuhai in Gongbei which is right on the border of Macau. Taxi fare is cheap due to short distance, unless you arrive via the port which is not that far either from around Jida's Juizhou Port, hydrofoil ferry from Shenzhen or Hong Kong. Lots of good shopping at the underground markets, you can access them when you come out of the passport terminal, but because of the two separate country regions you have to do a double passport check at each side. Original quality products can be found in Macau, imitations in China so buyer beware. However, the hotel is also situated nearby. It is a first class hotel offering a first class service so be ready to pay for it, service with a smile. I found the staff to be helpful and friendly, ready to provide you with satisfactory service guarantee. Across the road is a smaller hotel that offers a serviced apartment style with some business enterprises on separate floors; e.g. a nice little cake shop and a coffee shop on the ground floor, and an English language school call the American TPR English School upstairs if you're looking for foreigners or a PA to guide you around. I think it's fair to say that the price is justifiable considering prices in other countries and service staff like to do their job. There is much on offer outside, and lots of little cheap hotels down the street, or for those into clubbing, check out 'Yesterday' and 'Tomorrow', some wining and dining and other things. Lots of massage parlors near the border also, just turn left when you come out. You can drive through the border if you have a car but be warned checks are done due to creative importers. All in all a great little city to visit, population is around 2M, there are plenty of island trips, and it's nice to sleep in a place that is clean and tidy. Taxi to the other side of Zhuhai is not expensive, do yourself a favor and catch the taxi, saves the hassle of the bus during the day time, although at peak hour they usually send 3. No air con is the cheapest, sometimes there is only one bus at quieter locations. Getting to the other side of Zhuhai will set you back about half a CNY bill, careful of counterfeited notes they feel different, try not to get 100 bills off people outside, don't carry too much cash, there are pick pockets in Gongbei, so if you carry your wallet in the front pocket of your jeans, put your hand in it as you're walking. If you want to exchange cash go to the Bank of China. Jida is also a good shopping center not far from Gongbei 10mins by taxi. Now if you're desperate for a steack head to the Butterfly restaurant nearby, just catch a cab, best steak n chip meals in Zhuhai and affordable, nice soups too. If you're looking for a pizza I found one in Wanzaisha run by a Sth African who loves his chilli, nice beers there too, there's also a foreigners bar there behind the Japanese shopping center Jusco's departmental stores where you can buy all your appliances, etc. You will find a pizza and some good English conversation and
music there. I liked this area better for staying as Gongbei never sleeps until 3am. If you're looking for an apartment check out Horizon Cove, there is an international school on an island nearby. However, if you really want a first class hotel in Zhuhai take a look at the Yindu, there is a golf course nearby and my friends have also stayed there for around a week an dit's a good introduction. Well happy travels.
