A certain guidebook (2009 edition) recommends this hotel as "brand spanking new" but after we checked in, we discovered that it is anything but! The only positive thing here is the location - right inside the walking street area. For starters, the place has a really sketchy feeling overall. We would expect to find this sort of place in a backstreet red light district, not in the center of a pedestrian tourist area. We observed some people yelling at each other in the hallways and in other rooms - who knows what was going on there - but these people didn't seem like tourists. The place also had a mouldy, damp smell everywhere. We had to put on A/C to try to clear the air even though we didn't need it. Once inside the room, the room itself is not too bad - clean beds and imitation hardwood floors. But the bathroom was truly filthy (see photos) and ranks near the bottom of all the places we stayed at in Asia. The hot water took forever to start (my boyfriend and I both took cold showers before it began running warm). Also, there is no wifi internet, only ethernet connections - but get this - only in odd numbered rooms! We paid 100 yuan for the night (no breakfast) and checked out the next day. There are definitely better options in Guilin (not necessarily more expensive either) such as the Backstreet Hostel (one street south of YiJia, Riverside Hostel, and EG Hotel (right next to Riverside). Regardless of where you stay, I suggest you check the room before committing!
