InterContinental Tangshan

I stayed here for the last night during my 10 day business trip in China. From the start, the lobby looked dark and dated. The check in counter was on the left next to the massive wall - giving you a bit of insignificant vibe. Checked in went smoothly for all 3 of us who booked for 3 rooms. We then directed to find the elevators for our rooms with a specific instruction of how to open the door using the key card. It felt a bit weird but I understood why when I tried to open it. While walking in the hallway, I could smell cigarette but it was quite normal by now (after a week and a bit in the country - wasn't my first time in the country but it's a revisit after ten plus year). Was hoping that the smell would just stay outside. Opened the door and could smell the hint of it. I chose not to make a fuss since I needed to rush for my arranged dinner. However, it might have been too much for one of my colleagues as he needed to revisit the front desk for a new room - his first attempt was too much of the cigarette smell to bear. The room decor was quite dated although the room quality was ok but I didn't feel the Intercontinental from the room. It could have been from any local hotel in China, to be honest. After the dinner, I went back to the room, cleaned up and quite ready for bed. I did turn the A/C setting down to 20 degree C as the room was too warm for my liking. Went to bed and woke up sweat. Checked the temperature, the setting was exactly as I set before bed but the actual temperature was 25 degree. Tried not too think too much and tried hard to go back to sleep. This time, it wasn't as easy as the cigarette smell felt much stronger - I guessed it could have been from the heat or I felt too hot to sleep which made everything seemed to be quite annoyable. The sleep quality was bad as the temperature inside stayed the same all night at 25. I'd give them 3 star as their friendly staff/service was the only thing positive My short verdict - I will not come back to stay in this hotel next time I need to visit Tang Shan.

Lovely hotel. Good staff. Room well appointed. Location great opposite the memorial and next to Wanda shopping centre. Great swimming pool. Niggles - no bath salts or bubble bath. Decided to have buffet after late arrival, paid and started eating. but were not told that it finished at 8pm. Everything just suddenly disappeared!

I’ve stayed at this hotel 3 different times and my room smelled like smoke every single time. This most recent time in Sept, the smoke smell was so bad that I had to be switched to a different room and the new room still smelled like smoke. If you decide to take your clothes out of the suitcase, be ready for your clothes to smell as if you are a smoker! I’ve shared my experience with the front desk and all they can say is that although this is a non-smoking hotel, guests would still smoke inside the rooms. Tougher regulation and penalty need to be implemented. If you are allergic to the smell of smoke, this is definitely not the hotel for you. Will not be returning.
