Charms

I stayed at the Shanghai Charms for four nights as a solo traveller. I paid 55 EUR a night which included breakfast. Chinese breakfast, but they had fried eggs and small hash browns. At check in and concierge they spoke English but I only talked to two persons so not really sure about the overall English knowledge. Every day they left two bottles of water for free. A deposit of 200 Y was upon arrival paid with AmEx (refunded onto the credit card 3 or 4 days after check out). The standard of the room wasn’t good at all. I had a windowless room which wasn’t windowless as it had a window towards some sort of atrium so that was good but the room was very poorly maintained and it had a strange smell and the floor was simply disgusting. The cleaning was good and the location was great. No international tv channels, but the CGTN (English speaking/dubbed). Overall I am not satisfied with this hotel at all and wouldn’t choose it again. If I would have no choice but book this again, I wouldn’t go for the windowless rooms and count the breakfast out and have it at Starbucks instead making it kind of expensive alternative.

We had a fleeting night in shanghai so were happy with the location and price, at 350¥ for the budget room. Room was moderately sized but fine for one night, it was dated but comfortable and seemed clean enough. Staff were helpful insofar as they tried their best but I don’t think they’ve been well trained. If you’re just looking to get your head down for a night or two in a great location and you’re on a budget then you’ll probably find this place satisfactory.

Stayed for 5 nights. Like a lot of places in Shanghai, staff spoke enough English to get by without being fluent (still better than my grasp of Chinese!). Room was large with plenty of storage. Has a bar fridge, bottled water and kettle (although only supply tea). Can be noisy - both from other guests and road noise depending on the location of the room. Room was clean and comfortable. Is one block from the major shopping mall and 3 blocks from the Metro entrance (#14) so very good location. Also good food and service from the on site bar and restaurant, and plenty more options close by.
