We checked into your hotel today, 1st January. When we went up to our room, the housekeeper told me that the room is still not ready it still in a mess. She called the reception to inform them and asked us to wait for another 20 minutes. When my friend contacted the reception to enquire why they gave us a room that is not ready the receptionist rudely told my friend that if you don't want to wait you can go elsewhere to stay. The hotel staffs are utterly rude and avoid this hotel if you don't want to encounter unpleasant surprises.

Fortune Hotel is an average hotel with clean rooms and excellent location. I was in Shanghai for 6 nights, a single room with king-sized bed, for a business trip, my accommodations were arranged and provided by my host. The hotel is very close to Fudan University and several shopping malls. The service was standard; staff was efficient though not overly courteous. The lobby area included a refreshment bar that was open in the evenings and a gift store that was open at odd hours. There were affiliated restaurants that shared the hotel parking lot if you require meals nearby, and the Chinese-style buffet breakfast was especially good. The hotel overall was in average repair; you can see that the facility was updated in the not-distant past, but has started to become shabby. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the bed linens and towels were fresh and clean, the small bathroom was extremely clean and in very good repair. The room had a refrigerator, television, but no iron/ironing board. There was a room safe that would hold a laptop – though curiously the safe was not actually attached to anything, it just sat loose at the bottom of the closet area. The air conditioning was excellent, and an electric fan was also provided. The hotel was extremely quiet; though completely booked, I rarely encountered and never heard another guest expect in the lobby or occasionally on the elevator. The car park immediately outside the front door is busy and crowded and unattractive. Fortune Hotel is not a luxury property. However, for comfortable accommodations, a clean room, and a great location, I would return - and I would recommend this hotel, but only to friends and colleagues who are not hotel snobs.

I have stayed at the Fortune Hotel many times in my visits to China. It is classified as a 4 Star hotel by the locals but management has changed and I will not be staying there again. The hotel literature brags that it welcomes western tourists and business people but its behaviour is totally opposed. There is no one at the front desk who speaks English. Simple requests such as how do you make an outside call. are met with blank looks. Turns out the phone has to be "authorized" before you can use the phone. There is a free breakfast but their version of coffee is the local sweet instant coffee squirted into a paper cup. There is now no coffee as there used to be. If you want fried eggs there are lots - all ice cold spread out on a tray. I asked for a knife to cut the my toast and spread the jam which is in a large open bowl beside the toaster with a communal spoon. and was offered a pair of scissors. I was then informed they have no knives. I had bought some ice wine as a gift and stored it in the closet in my room. I had done this several times previously. It was stolen and when I told the front desk they simply shrugged even when I brought in someone who could speak English. The hotel is located in a Korean section in the Minhang District. If you like Korean food there several restaurants nearby. I could go on but my recommendation is to avoid this hotel like the plague.
