Donghu Hotel’s service is an absolute disgrace. After check-out, I left my luggage at the front desk and noticed my deposit wasn't refunded. I messaged the front desk staff, 'Pan Tian Yi', multiple times via WeChat, but he intentionally ignored all my messages. When I returned to the hotel and asked for an explanation, instead of apologizing, he aggressively yelled at me and used his physical size to intimidate me. His excuse was mind-blowing: "Since you had to come back for your luggage anyway, I intentionally withheld your deposit so I could charge you for the paid tea in person." He clearly targeted me because I am a solo foreign female with limited Chinese, holding my money hostage and threatening me. Later, the manager privately contacted me, trying to hush it up by offering a "room upgrade," while the hotel’s official response was full of dishonest excuses. I have officially reported this to the 12315 (Consumer Rights Protection). This hotel does not respect international tourists. Avoid at all costs. 절대 가지 마세요. 외국인 여성 고객을 위협하고 보증금을 인질로 잡는 최악의 호텔 동후 빈관의 서비스 수준은 바닥입니다. 퇴실 후 짐을 맡기고 외출한 동안 보증금 환불이 되지 않아 프론트 직원 ‘판티엔이(Pan Tian Yi)’에게 위챗으로 여러 번 문의했으나, 의도적으로 읽고 씹으며 연락을 무시(装死)했습니다. 나중에 호텔로 돌아와 이유를 묻자, 그 직원은 미안해하기는커녕 적반하장으로 소리를 지르고 덩치로 위협하며 뻔뻔하게 대꾸했습니다. “어차피 짐 찾으러 올 텐데 그때 유료 차(茶) 값을 받으려고 일부러 보증금을 안 돌려주고 기다렸다”는 기괴한 변명이었습니다. 중국어가 서툰 외국인 여성 혼자라고 만만하게 보고 보증금을 인질 삼아 기만하고 위협한 것입니다. 이후 매니저는 개인적으로 연락해 ‘객실 업그레이드’ 따위로 대충 입막음하려 시도했고, 공식적으로는 사실을 왜곡하는 변명만 늘어놓았습니다. 12315(시장감독국)에 정식 실명 고발 완료했습니다. 이 호텔은 서비스업의 수치이며, 외국인 관광객을 절대 존중하지 않습니다. 무조건 거르세요. 千万别 避雷！前台员工恐吓外籍女游客、私扣押金，极其恶劣的垃圾酒店 上海东湖宾馆的服务简直令人作呕。退房后我将行李寄存前台，因为押金迟迟未退，我通过微信多次询问前台员工‘潘天义’，但他全程故意已读不回、装死无视。 当我回酒店取行李并质问他为什么不回信息时，他不仅毫无歉意，反而理直气壮地对着我大吼大叫，利用身材高大的优势对我进行言语恐吓和身体压迫。他甚至狡辩称：“反正你要回来取行李，我打算等你不退押金，见面再收茶钱。” 这完全是因为我是一个中文不流利的外籍女性，觉得我软弱可欺，才敢如此明目张胆地私扣押金并恐吓我。 事后，酒店经理私下加我微信，企图用所谓的“房间升级”来敷衍收买我，而酒店的官方回复更是避重就轻、扭曲事实。目前已正式向中国12315实名举报！这家百年老店连最起码的职业道德都没有，丢尽了酒店业和国家的脸。大家千万不要来送钱受气！

Business trip and great accomodation downtown Shanghai. Very comfortable solution in a very lively area, full of top restaurants and bar. Room is ok, all comforts, relatively modern. Nice staff, friendly and supportive. Recommended

We stayed here during our recently visit to Shanghai. This hotel has been recently renovated and is a traditional looking hotel that takes you back to the old days in Shanghai. It was once home to the godfather of Shanghai, a well know mafia before the communist time. He lived here with his five wives, so he needed a big home. I booked this place mainly because I grew up in this area. It's about one block away from the first subway line ever built in Shanghai and less than a block away from Huaihai road, which is the place to see and be seen by local Shanghainese people. The crowd in the area caters more to the expats, but the hotel itself has mostly Chinese guests. Forget Pudong, this is where the real actions are in Shanghai, where celebrities go and the trendiest places are. This hotel is right in the middle of all of that. There is a Peet's coffee across the street and bars with people drinking and facing the street, for example. but if you walk another 100 meter, you can find a hustling and bustling local community near by with a wet market and a few stands for breakfast in the morning. You can get breakfast for less than $1. You totally get an authentic feel of being in the French Concession of Shanghai staying here. Honestly, I felt like not much has changed since I left 20+ years ago. The hotel itself was pretty good. with the renovation, the rooms have comfortable beds that meet western standards and nice showers. Those were my two main concerns when staying at a Chinese government run hotel, but I'm glad it all worked out great. since the hotel is pretty old, the rooms are good size as well. There is also a nice pool we got to take advantage of. It's not a five star, mainly because I went in the summer and subway stop still seems a bit far under the heat and humidity. I had to cab it from the hotel to the subway stop, it's one LONG block (about 10 min walk).
