Shanghai Classical

I'm not sure how this hotel gets such a high rating for cleanliness. There was a 2 inch border of dust all the way around the room and behind all the doors. It was the only hotel where we felt compelled to keep something on our feet the entire time. Carpets in the room and hallways were badly stained. The front desk was not able to help us get tickets to the New Shanghai Circus; we had to go to the concierge at the Raddison. Location is the hotel's only positive point. There was no free internet and our phone did not work. Maintenance came to check the phone and basically agreed it didn't work. Bulbs in a couple of lamps were out making the room very dark.

We checked into this hotel December 25 th. and stayed 4 nights. It met all of our expectations. We found the room to be very clean and serviced promptly every day. The location of the hotel was fantastic being a short walk to the Bund, close to many restaurants, lots of shopping, and very charming area close to the Yu Yuan Garden. Breakfast was included in the room rate and was typical Chinese fare i.e. steamed veggies, fried rice or noodles, steamed buns,etc. It also included some fresh fruit, toast and VERY good coffee. Free internet use was also available. The staff was friendly and helpful. This is not a big chain hotel with lots of services and high prices but a small well run Chinese hotel. We definately enjoyed our stay and would surely return here again.

I live in Shanghai, and book Classical Hotel whenever I have a visit (friends, family, etc). I have slept myself in this place several times. Placed in the middle of an area known as Old Shanghai, it is near the city center, but the area still has some of the taste and atmosphere of the old times of the city (delicious!) , in contrast with the modernity of the city center. The building is Classical Chinese style, the interior is comfortable and clean, and prices are very reasonable. The hotel is occupied mainly by Chinese, so the breakfast has the local stuff, totally different to Western breakfast, but worth trying. Reception staff speak English. A nice place to stay!! Makes you feel in China with a good level of comfort. Still, if you value high luxe, this could not be your hotel.
