Shanghai Eager Hotel

Decent hotel few steps away from the metro. Very smokey hotel as they do not have non smoking rooms. Helpful staff but can only speak in basic english. Could do more to be more environmental friendly though, our room slippers were changed everyday.

I stayed here for a few days on business and found the room size fine for my needs and the wireless quite fast enough for email for email checking. The staff are abrupt but competent in a limited way but you will need either to speak Chinese (at least some basic phrases) or be with a local as English is not a strength of the staff. Breakfast was Chinese basics and not worth it unless included. Main asset is the direct access to Metro Line 2 below the hotel and be ease of getting around to various business districts without the business hotel price tag. I would use this hotel again.

For many years now i have stayed in this hotel every time i was in Shanghai, which was about once or twice a year, the people in the counter knew me and i have a VIP card that let me upgrade my rooms, normally i was very happy staying in this hotel. Its in a good location, right next to a subway station, super easy to get there form Hongquiao Train station or airport, a lot of good and cheap places to eat nearby, the rooms where not the greatest but quite good for Chinese standards, and now that i could upgrade to the higher class of room for the same price it was even better. But lets be honest its best qualities where price and convenience. Unfortunately I will not be staying in this hotel anymore, because they unfairly treated me and one of my friends like criminals Basically i had a friend visit me and they asked her to register at the counter, but she didn't bring her purse so she did not have an ID card, she still told them her number, but they insisted they needed to see the card and started an argument right there in the lobby. We explained that she was not going to be there for long, and that i was a frequent costumer of this hotel, but they kept arguing so we decided to just ignore them and go to the room, i thought since this really wasn't a big deal and since i had stayed there for years and years without ever causing a single problem that they would let it go. I was very wrong next thing i know the police where barging into my room, like they were the spanish inquisition, interrogating me and my friend as if we were criminals, at the end she had to go to the police station with them to prove her identity, all because the people of the counter would not let this go. I have lived in China for more that 6 years now and if someone had told me this anecdote i would not have believed it, especially in such an open and international city as Shanghai, sadly these things still happen, but i do not blame the authorities i blame the hotel staff, and that is why they wont have my business anymore.
