This would have to be one of the most disgusting and dirty places I have stayed in, and I have stayed in tribal Africa, camped and travelled all over the world really. I'm not precious, but a would expect some cleanliness and reasonable facilities and happy to meet you staff.
My overseas company booked myself and colleagues here for 12 nights via a booking site that does not allow refunds, so we all felt obligated to stick with it.
Staff do not speak anything but Chinese and everything is an absolute effort and done begrudgingly.
First night the room was absolutely disgusting. Stained and dirty everything. Very old. The carpet on the floor in the hallways straight out of the 80's with the stains and wear and tear to match. That was a prelude to the room. Floor dirty, linen stained, fingermarks and grime everywhere, chairs and couches and everything covered in 30 years of stains, mould in the shower, a bit like my own home!!!
Seriously, this was bad. Really cold night. A/C/heating not working. The previous tenant had it set at 35 degrees! I wore all clothing I had to bed and still froze. Bed like a brick, pillows so lumpy and uncomfortable, really old I guess like the rest of the place. No refrigerator in the room, it was missing. Light bulbs not working.
Next day asked for a change of room. Had to recheck in, do the whole passport thing again. Actually a party of us staying there in several rooms, all complaining. So my room was inspected. The manager thought all was OK until I pointed out the obvious. So we were all moved to a different floor.
Room slightly less worn but not clean, but at least the heating was working in all our rooms! Many light bulbs still not working. Bed and pillows terrible.
So I came back from work obligations at 5pm and the room was half serviced. The maid came in and emptied bins, took away towels, but did not replace. Still no refrigerator, just a hole, they finally brought one, probably from someone else's room.
So the maid comes back to clean and dust. I'm in the room. Does that, wipes the toilet seat etc, then cleans glasses and cups with the same cloth. OMG. I used them the night before.
Then, just to top it off, cleans the toilet with a squeegee mop and the proceeds to mop the floors with that water. I stopped her halfway through and told her to leave the room.
From then on I then washed my own cups and glasses and left them strategically placed, they were not touched as I had assumed from cleaning standards, so I figure I could drink out of them again.
TV is a flat screen but only good if you know Chinese, They advertise Cable TV but it is in Chinese. Found 2 English movies, dubbed in Chinese with English subtitles that were half cut off the screen so couldn't read them. Two of my colleagues were Chinese nationality, so at least they helped me with the remote, (in Chinese) but they too were disgusted with the place.
Internet, is slow and has the usual Chinese blockages, so no Google or Facebook, Twitter etc and as it is in China, no BBC, ABC, CNN or world news. Having lived in China previously I was aware of this so made other plans via iPhone..
China is rife with Hepatitis and other communicable diseases. I hope my vaccinations hang in there.
No way would I ever, nor my work colleagues, recommend Baolong Homelike Hotel Shanghai. We all had no sleep and left like Zombies.
PS. Did I mention they don't do breakfast. Probably just as well, I can't imagine what the kitchen would be like!!!
