Urcove by Hyatt Shanghai Jing'an

In my room now and there is construction work going on outside at 1am. Who works at 1am? There is no double glazing so this noise is LOUD. The hotel itself is nice and well located but the noise from construction (not the hotels construction) is unbearable. I came here for a nice sleep but all I can hear is construction. Quite disappointed that this can happen.

Nice hotel for China. Good Value. Good neighborhood. Bank of China right next door. They have ATM or teller service to exchange cash. Food is a five to ten minute walk. Closet metro stop is a 15 minute walk (right out hotel, right on big road and continue walking, it will be on left) Metro stop is Jing'an Temple stop

OK let's get the story straight here on this property. I'm rating the property 4 stars - but it's not a 4-star hotel, it's just a good little 3-star hotel and the fourth star is meant to say that in its class/category as a low-cost hotel, it's fairly decent and overall a good value. It's very functional, if you are a bit durable. It's not for the Shangri-La crowd, not a chance. But it's not a dump, either, it's respectable. The negatives are as follows; Not a lot of English is spoken at the counter, though they do try their best. And, some of the rooms are smoky, noting that a lot of the visitors, the majority of which are Chinese, smoke. My room, #5022, had the faint smell of cigarette smoke, and I changed to this room after being in #5026, which had a stronger smoke smell. Having said all of this, the truth is that it wasn't so bad and I got used to it, and stayed almost 20 days. The hotel is a 20 minute walk from the Jing'an metro station. Take a cab from the metro to the hotel your first time, or anytime when it's hot. Tip: Catch a cab from Jing'an park side of Nanjing West Road. The cabdriver might complain a bit, in that he'll have to turn the cab around to get to the destination, but at least you'll reliably be able to hail a cab and get on your way. Take exit #5 by the little Starbucks, then walk up the outside steps to the street, and there's a place where taxis stop and pick up passengers. If you're hungry, walk into Jing'an Park, just a few hundred feet to Thai Gallery restaurant tucked away in the trees. The room was compact but really quite nice. Everything modern. The bed was very, very comfortable and with the air conditioning on all night (in June) I slept quite well. The staff in the lobby is constantly bogged down in telephone calls and relentless picky requests by the guests, but if you're a bit patient, they'll take care of you. There's an ATM right next door (one that works with my Wells Fargo ATM Card) and a Family Mart convenience store right across the street. Being a bit away from the heart of the Jing'An district, you'll find the hotel located in a more homey, less commercial area. If you walk West on Wuding road, you'll find a few food places and other stores. But if you walk East on Wuding (you have to immediately cross Wuning, a big street), after a couple of blocks you['ll reach a T intersection. You can go right or left to a variety of shops and restaurants, but I would recommend at first going right (South) and you will encounter many nice restaurants and shops as you wander toward Jing'an Temple. This is a nice area and you'll find a lot of expatriates having things to eat. You may also find Ola cafe, an expatriate oasis with, of all things, a laundramat. You might want to bring some earplugs. There's some construction underway near the hotel (starts early) as of this writing. Overall, a good place and a good value.
