Regal Plaza Hotel & Residence

A modern style hotel in the wrong place - industrial areas all around and nowhere to go outside for a safe walk or to local restaurants. 4-star rating reflects maybe the location rather than the hotel itself. Hotel ran out of double-bed rooms but we scored a free upgrade to a suite (without asking) - very grateful for that. Only 2 pillows - had to request more. Staff very obliging and trying to help, but English skills less than we found in most other hotels in China. Breakfast was near enough the best we had in this 4-city trip.

We had the good luck to arrive in Shanghai several hours before Typhoon Bebinca and spent the next 24hrs hold up in this hotel. Sadly the glass roof of the atrium over the dining area suffered damage and stormwater entered, causing a few issues. The large room was well appointed with a nice bathroom, shower only. We were on the 23rd floor but had no view to speak of. A mini market was opposite with beer, snacks & other goods but with the storm it was too dangerous to leave the foyer! Strangely the room had a microwave but no utensils, plates etc?? The breakfast was very good with lots of choices & hot coffee, yay! But I was going stir crazy locked down with only Chinese TV to while away the time. Mind you the Typhoon was one of the trips highlights! Not a bad Hotel to spend two nights but hope for better weather.

The hotel was ok, however, this was spoiled by the air conditioning in our room not working properly. We could not get the temperature below 25oC. ( temperature outside was 33oC ) This made the two nights sleep very uncomfortable. We were give a small fan to blow the hot air around the room. We were not the only ones who had this problem. There was a queue at the reception desk of quests who had the same problem. Unfortunately the hotel was full so we were not able to change rooms. Beds were very hard and only one pillow was provided. The staff were professional, helpful and friendly and did their best considering they do not speak English. Breakfast was good
