Wugong Hotel

After a horror story at the airport what a joy to phone up Wu Gong and book a standard double room for one night tonight. No messing around, my name was enough to make the reservation and we arrived at about 13:30 and we were able to check in immediately .Helpful staff who processed our admission in a few minutes without any hitches. They also accepted Alipay for payment and there was no nonsense about deposits. There are probably cheaper and better rooms in Shanghai but this hotel once more worked very well for us. Its location is critical and I love browsing in the book shops small and big which are nearby and looking at all the calligraphy stuff. Breakfast unremarkable but plenty of coffee helped fire me up for the rest of the day.

This is essentially targeted at Chinese visitors but there's no getting away from the fact that it is a quality business with a strong customer focus. Reception staff utterly efficient. Rooms comfortable and well equipped. The buffet breakfast, offering typical Chinese fare, was surprisingly decent and edible if somewhat haphazard. Location in former French Concession superb ... exit hotel turn right walk for ten minutes and reach The Bund, turn left reach People's Square. Metro nearby too. As a China resident thus will be my base for all future trips to Shanghai.
