Chengdu California Garden Hotel

California Gardens is a western style hotel, with a mainly Chinese cliential. I have stayed twice. Rooms were clean with and well furnished. Front desk had English speakers and were helpful. Walking distance to attractions and shopping. Breakfast was good, with both Chinese and western dishes. Expect to see multiple wedding parties on the weekend.

I stayed in the main building, and should have taken the VIP tower -- the breakfast is different and much better. Rooms are adequate, but beware -- you can walk a long long way in this hotel. Staff are nice, though english proficiency varies a lot (we got lucky, they had an intern with perfect english at the concierge stand). (This is the not most exciting part of Chengdu - local dining options exist but are not great.)

I have been here during a one week conference. The rooms are large and comfortable even if they strongly smell smoke as non-smoking policy is not clear in China. Probably rooms are now non smoking but the smell is deeply rooted in the carpets and walls. The WiFi is awful even if you can have a router in your very room. Not clear if this is relatd to the Great Firewall or with the poor WiFi itself. The breakfast is abundant and varied. The personnel is extremely friendly even if very few of them speaks english. I was at the tenth floor but the traffic noise still strong due to poor windows isolation.
