Jade Gallery Boutique Hotel

I stayed at the Jade Gallery Boutique Hotel in March, and while the space was impressively grand and the service attentive, I found the construction to be a little bit... off. Yes the ceiling were high and the halls wide, but they also had bouncy carpets. The rooms were very dark, and mine had a rather interesting nook behind the minibar to sit, but it was essentially a giant mat by the window. Plugs were lacking (especially for the hairdryer), and there was no light by the mirror (even if you wanted to use it). There were no dressers, just a closet. The internet connection was horrible (but part of that was the connection to the Wifi - the hotel's responsibility - and the other the actual line which is the telco). The bed was a bit rough for my taste (and for the SLH moniker). It was also, as the other reviewer mentioned, eerily quiet. I suppose I should mention in this part that it's also not terribly convenient to anything except, I believe, a new conference center nearby. However... the included (sometimes mislabeled) breakfast was good, and accompanied by an impressive tower of decorative bread that one of the three European hostesses (all women) told me they bake every day or so. The concierge/butler service by said Europeans was very polite and good, though they were the only way to communicate with the staff (oddly, or perhaps intentionally, there were no Chinese staff who could speak English). In one sentence, this seems to be a hotel geared toward Chinese businessmen (because in China they are mostly men) and toward their tastes.

New hotel in Chengdu, not too far from the airport. More staff than visitors while I was there and the restaurants and bars were deserted. Breakfast was quite good, western style cooked breakfast better than in many other hotels - at least it was hot and reasonably fresh. Apart from a couple of Europeans working in the hotel using English to communicate with hotel staff was at times difficult, but still good natured. Rooms large, but like the rest of the hotel quite dark, it wasn't possible to completely open the window blinds to let in some light. Could only find a couple of English language TV channels - CCTV and RT. Good price too, less than RMB 600/night mid week including breakfast.
