GreenTree Inn Urumqi South Xinhua Road Hotel

Good hotel, nice rooms, even if they smell a bit like smoke (Chinese people smoke a bit everywhere). The receptionists understand no language except Chinese, but they do their best to help (they use a translator on the mobile). Urumqi is a reallty interesting city, with almost no tourists. A real Chinese adventure! Would go back!

Pros Good location (walking distance from the bazaar and 3/4 bus stops away from the Red Hill and the shuttles to the airport and Heavenly lake). Friendly staff. Cons Dirty building. Dirty carpets. Dirty curtains. Dirty walls. Bathrooms smells moldly. I was counting all these things and laughing; basically everything you draw your attention to is worn, broken or dirty. The last night there suddenly was no hot water for showering; that wasn't so funny. Other Didn't find any nice restaurants close by, except some cheap local-style noodles place.

We chose this hotel as we were arriving late to Urumqi and wanted to take an early morning bus to Turpan and the bus station was nearby. Upon arrival we found that one of the two rooms we had booked had a strong smell of sewage, so we were offered another room, even though at the beginning they told us that they did not have any more rooms available. The other room had the same problem. Finally, using a translation software, as the staff could not speak a word of English, we agreed that we will stay in the only one room that did not smell and were charged only for one room. The room was small (not a surprise in China) and had not got maintenance for a long, long time. It was practically falling into pieces. We checked out as early as possible and run away from this lousy place. If you can, avoid this hotel
