City Hotel Odense

This was without a doubt the worst hotel experience of my life, and something I would never wish on anyone. The room I was given was extremely dirty. The toilet was clearly uncleaned, the area under the bed was filthy, there was trash in the corner of the room, and the room itself was dark and depressing. On top of all that, the door was broken and unsafe. I have a cat with me, and because of the broken door, my cat managed to push the door and escape. During the room change — which the staff only agreed to after a lot of resistance — my cat ran out. I spent fifteen terrifying minutes standing in the freezing cold at the parking exit, completely panicked, trying to stop my cat from disappearing. Those minutes felt like a heart attack waiting to happen. Thankfully, I finally managed to get my cat back safely. What made this experience even worse was the attitude of the staff. The young woman at the front desk was completely indifferent. At first, she said they had no other rooms. When I said this was absolutely unacceptable, she replied “maybe tomorrow.” Only after other guests were in recetion did they finally show me another room. And even after everything that happened, there was not a single word of apology. No empathy. No responsibility. This was the most stressful, frightening, and disappointing hotel experience I have ever had. I strongly warn everyone: Never experience this hotel — especially if you travel with a pet.

We booked a room months in advance (standard, double room). We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and were assigned room 143, located outside the hotel building with access through the parking lot or a side door. The room appeared dark and unwelcoming. It had two glass doors facing the parking lot and a very small window (like a basement window) located on the same wall. There were cars parked right in front of the doors. There was no actual shower area in the bathroom, but a shower head placed behind the bathroom door. As an enclosure, it had a plastic panel and a mini shower curtain that were supposed to be joined somehow (leaving room for creativity) and did not offer much in terms of comfort or separation. The whole room/bathroom looked like a service area. The shower space was probably where the mop/bucket had been stored before. We asked the young woman at the reception desk to find a different room as we found 143 unacceptable. She proceeded by stating that "This is what you booked". That was an epitome of professionalism for someone working in the hospitality industry. Apparently, the hotel "has only 4 standard rooms" and none of the others were available. She offered us an apartment located a block away for a price difference. We took the apartment and that proved to be another subpar accommodation as it was outdated, with a small and smelly bathroom, and located in a noisy/loud location. We had opted for breakfast that was served in the main building, once again, in a basement. The food was OK, just enough to start the day. Our favorite part about the City Hotel in Odense was checking out and leaving it behind.

The beds were good, but the room worn out. It does not seem that there has been much update since the 1990s. There were no joints in the bathroom, and ants had found their way in, so they were in several places in the room. Breakfast was okay. Reception staff very young but friendly.
