Toberua Island Resort

Was here for 9 nights with my wife to celebrate our anniversary. Toberua Islsnd is not like your average Fijian Resort. It was more like being invited into a Fijian village (but with your own luxury bure). We were welcomed by the staff singing local songs and each guest was serenaded on the last night with their own farewell song. The staff are wonderful and full of great charm, friendliness, humor and genuine warmth. So too were our hosts Nick and Pip who were always around to help with any issues or questions and we enjoyed chatting with them each night in the bar before dinner. The food was excellent. Lots of fresh local seafood and other produce cooked with local flavors and very tasty. We had full board and were never hungry 😋. We never had the same dish offered to us during our entire stay. The island is small which added to the village feel but the surrounding waters offered a huge range of options including paddle boarding, swimming, fishing, snorkeling and diving. The adjoining foreshore is tidal and swimming and snorkeling is good when the tide is in and you can easily walk around the Island when the tide is out. I did three two-tank dives and each one was a new site. Lots of turtles, reef sharks 🦈 and other tropical fish 🐠. Even heard some whale song on one dive. The dive master Georgie was very experienced and knowledgeable and it was often just me and him in the water. We had the Romance package which included a private trip to "Picnic Island" where we had our own deserted sandy island to ourselves for several hours. MAGIC! The staff really made us feel welcome and we enjoyed their singing, quality service and they even let me play beach volley ball with them (despite my age and creaky joints) and children were also invited to play and made to fell included. This destination is great for couples and families wanting an authentic Fijian experience. Would like return some day. Rob and Helen. (PS no AI used - totally human)

We came to Toberua (after 30+ hours of travel from NYC!) honestly wondering if it might be a little too rustic for us — and it ended up exceeding every possible expectation. I am very much a Four Seasons/luxury hotel person, and Toberua was originally meant to be a fun stopover on our way to New Zealand. Instead, it became one of the absolute highlights of our trip, and now all four of us can’t wait to go back. We stayed in their largest bure, which I believe they only have one of. It had three bedrooms and was enormous — it probably could have accommodated another 3–5 people beyond our family of four. We had more than enough space, and everyone having their own bathroom was a huge plus. One funny thing: when we arrived, we crossed paths with guests who were leaving and warning us that the weather had been bad and the winds were too strong. Naturally, we got a little nervous. We saw absolutely none of it. The weather was literally perfect for all five days of our stay — beautiful, sunny and exactly what you picture when you think of Fiji. What makes Toberua truly special, though, is the people. Everyone mentions the staff in their reviews, and now I completely understand why. The staff and managers somehow make you feel less like a resort guest and more like you’ve been welcomed into their family. My husband was sick for one day during our stay, and one of the bar attendants made him a special Fijian tea, at no charge, that we now joke basically cured him. That kind of genuine care was typical of our entire stay. I also thought I would dislike the set meal times, but I ended up loving them. Everyone dines around the same time, so you naturally start meeting other guests. We got to know some amazing families during our stay, and it created a sense of community that you simply don’t get at a large resort. And the food is outstanding. Everything was incredibly fresh, plentiful and consistently delicious. The drinks were excellent too, and we loved spending time around the bar in the evenings and participating in the activities. We sincerely appreciated the BBQ night that got switched to Friday from Saturday when we were leaving (+ several other families) so that we would get a chance to experience it. The spa was another huge surprise. The treatments were genuinely excellent — not just “good for a small island resort.” The massages were properly firm, the facials were fantastic, and I liked them enough that I had two massages and two facials during our stay. My daughter had a facial as well and loved it. Our son’s favorite part of Toberua was much simpler: 5 p.m. volleyball with the staff. It became the highlight of his day, every single day. He basically organized his afternoon around making sure he was back in time for volleyball. We also did two trips to Picnic Island, including one private trip, as well as a snorkeling excursion. All were wonderful, but our private trip to Picnic Island was probably the highlight of our entire Fiji trip. It is absolutely spectacular and something I would strongly recommend doing while staying here. And yes, we did see the sea snakes that some other reviewers mention. Before arriving, reading about them made them sound much more alarming than the reality. We saw a few in the water, they were completely docile, and it certainly wasn’t something that felt constantly “in your face” or interfered with our enjoyment of the island at all. There are a couple of things worth knowing. The biggest negative for us was the mosquitoes. We had quite a few in both the bathrooms and bedrooms. We ended up spraying our rooms with our own mosquito repellent before nighttime, and even with that, we came home with plenty of bites. I would definitely recommend bringing a good supply of repellent. Some of the recreational equipment around the bar could also use a little TLC — the pool table and a few other things are showing their age. But these are minor complaints compared with how special the overall experience was. Toberua isn’t a polished, cookie-cutter luxury resort — and I think that is exactly why we fell in love with it. It has personality, warmth and an incredible sense of place. If you had told me beforehand that our family would be this obsessed with a tiny island resort that I initially worried might be “too rustic” for us, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

I do not know where to start with this review! We stayed here for ten nights for our honeymoon from England. As soon as we arrived we were greeted with such warmth from both Pip and Nick and the staff. Food: As a vegetarian I normally struggle with food abroad so I didn’t have high expectations. But my goodness, the food was 5*. We didn’t have the same meal more than once. It was fresh and tasty every meal ( we went full board which was well with the price). The drinks at the bar were amazing and would highly recommended the smoothies!! Accommodation: As soon as we arrived at our deluxe ocean bure, we were very impressed. They are not modern, but very rustic so be prepared for lizard visitors! (We loved this). The view to the ocean was breathtaking and we could not hear a sound when we arrived, just the relaxation we needed. We also loved the outdoor shower aspect and receiving our news letter every night! Activities: We hit a bit of bad weather during our stay which I was concerned about initially, however, we were never bored. Plenty of activities and so nice just to relax in the bar. We also did a trip to bird island, which I would highly recommend as it was very surreal and lovely to see all the red footed boobys! We loved playing the darts and pool in the bar area and the staff always put on activities during the day. Staff and service: As mentioned from the moment we arrived, we were met with traditional Fijian warmth and happiness. All the staff went out of the way to say hello, and drinks were always kept topped up during meal times. Pip and Nick were always to be seen during the day if you needed anything, and always made us feel so welcome. Overall: We absolutely fell in love with the island. And are already planning our next trip here. We could not fault the food or service and is perfect if you want a relaxing holiday. The different traditional aspects of the holiday such as the Toberua Serenaders, the Fijian night and the Sunday choir service made it so much more special and was nice to have the cultural experience during our stay, also making it feel very special. Also Jack the parrot was such a highlight of our holiday, make sure you say hello to him if you stay here! He started to remember us by the end of the holiday and shouted at us from the trees! Overall a 5* holiday and a perfect place of tranquility.
