Hostellerie Du Maine Brun

We had high hopes of the location and hotel, this was not cheap. On arrival receptionist was scruffily dressed in jeans and doubled as bar tender. She was helpful, but didn't know how to mix and Gin and Tonic. Food was good and staff tried to find something that suited us as my friend prefers fish or chicken and menu was typically local, very rich etc. but well cooked and presented. We got the impression that this is an "amateur" effort to run an hotel.

Stayed here in early October 2012. I think we were one of the last guest before the hotel closed for the winter months. There was only one other couple in the hotel. The owners were super friendly and the room was very clean and charming. It is a little off the beaten path but it you're looking for a get away and don't want a lot of city noise, this is the place to go. I used Mapquest to get directions and had no problems. We opted to have dinner at the hotel and were glad we did. The food was simply AMAZING. I've submitted photos to show you what a great job the chef did. I recommend eat at the hotel restaurant at least one night during your stay. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed for 3 nights while visiting the historic car racing nearby in Angouleme. It is very French, our room being furnished in the antique style, French windows opening onto a small patio and great views over the garden. The whole area is extremely peaceful. The floor in the room was terracotta tiles with rugs. In places, the tiles were breaking and need replacing. Cleanliness isn't a hotspot - we found several large cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, but it didn't worry us too much. There is a restaurant - we ate their one evening. The food is of very good quality, well cooked and well presented. But it is totally without character and somewhere where you are frightened to talk in anything other than whispers! We ate out the other 2 nights. You'd struggle to find the place without a current sat nav, especially if arriving in the dark and the nearest main road is exceptionally busy. On balance, it is somewhere I'd stay again
