Gasthof Fraundorfer

I wanted to like this place and I gave it a try in spite of some of the bad reviews (I also like to support local businesses). I’m not one to complain or leave bad reviews but there are a few things to be aware of if considering this place. Finding where to check in was an issue. Apparently you walk into a restaurant to check in. The restaurant was dark and the door was closed. There were no instructions on the outside of the building as to where to go. The other option was a dark corridor that was what I assume, a smoking area. During check in the older woman asked if we wanted breakfast in the morning (an additional 27 euros each). I told her not tomorrow but maybe sometime during our stay. She chased us out into the parking area to ask about breakfast again stating that I didn’t tell her. My daughter and I stayed for 3 nights. The stay itself was fine. The view was beautiful but the room was tiny, no coffee maker in the room and overall a tired, old building. Upon checkout (and this is where it gets good) the same older woman gave me a bill for an additional 124 euros because she said my reservation was only for one person and I had two. I told her it wasn’t specified when I made my reservation (Expedia). She was very rude and said “this is what I’m telling you”. I explained that I rented a ROOM and nowhere did I have to indicate how many guests and the room was for two people (no more would’ve fit, it was TINY). I explained that I chose this hotel based on value and said if I’d have known that it was going to be so much more, I would have picked a different place. I said I was happy to pay for parking and city tax but had an issue with the additional person charge. She got defiant and said “this is what I’m telling you!!!”. I felt like I was getting bullied into paying extra. She was obviously angry that I questioned the charge. She threw her hands up and walked away. I have no idea where she went. I waited several minutes and even called out so I could get this resolved but she never returned. Think carefully before booking this hotel. There’s better ones out there.

The room was perfect - very comfortable bed, loads of space, nice view, big bathroom. We had several meals here and each one of them was delicious. Particular mention goes to the schnitzel and their deserts! Their beer, wine, spirits and liqueur selection left nothing to be desired, but their homemade cider "der most" was utterly delightful - dry and crisp and perfectly refreshing. Be warned, it doesn't feel strong til you stand after your third glass. Service was friendly, helpful and I never felt like I had to wait for attention. Food was brought out promptly. Cost for the rooms was excellent value. Food and drink were excellent value too for excellent quality. If I could give this place 7 stars out of 5, I would! I'd recommend Kirchenwirt Fraundorfer to anyone even thinking about visiting Austria.

What a wonderful little slice of heaven in old Bavaria. This place is absolutely a gem. The dinner menu was fantastic, though just a little pricey...but you get great entertainment and the food is top notch. You get what you pay for...big plates, for sure. It was always packed full, so make sure to book a reservation. Breakfast is a wonderfully personal treat and had everything you'd expect of a European style breakfast. The sisters Fraundorfer run the place and do so splendidly. There are three lodging buildings, so inquire so your needs are met. I think the two back buildings are more modern and upscale from the main gasthof. Most comfortable bed we stayed in our entire trip to Bavaria/Austria. There is parking on site at 6 euro a night. Shopping on Ludwigstrasse is fairly slim. Best shop is the chocolate shop just across the street...amazing. Marienplatz isn't far away and there are many more shops/restaurants there. Definitely try the Shaka Burgerhaus joint, it was fantastic! There are no XMAS stores around. Closest is Oberammergau, which is a great little town to visit/shop in. I highly recommend this place for a real, authentic taste of Bavarian culture. Wi-Fi was excellent. No AC, but the alpine evenings are cool and the doors tilt open, so it was very comfortable at night. Extremely clean. Very satisfied with our stay.
