Rappen Rothenburg

We stayed for 3 nights on a B&B basis in a 4 star superior room during Rothenburg’s September Imperial City Festival (Reichsstadt-Festtage), therefore the hotel was very busy as expected. As the hotel is outside the city walls access was easy with plenty of parking spaces available (we arrived about 3 pm). Check in was fairly straight forward although rather than taking a card pre-authorisation we were asked to pay in full, which wasn’t a problem just a little unusual. We were also given a car park ticket to display in the windscreen during our stay. We found the room to be a good size but with no safe, which was disappointing. The bathroom had a bath and shower combination but no slip mat was provided, which meant care had to taken stepping over the edge of the bath. Apparently only deluxe rooms and above have a safe and walk-in shower. Despite daily housekeeping our floor was never cleaned during our stay and remained dusty with hair from previous visitors having congregated in corners. We found the reception staff to be friendly but the staff at breakfast not so and those serving in the beer garden were just simply rude. This wasn’t a language or translation issue as we speak enough German to get by; it was the attitude and tone when ordering and paying. It’s a shame really as the hotel itself is in a good location with modern facilities and it looks the part, but alas it didn’t live up to expectations and their customer service needs to raise up a notch or two.

So we booked this hotel after we booked somewhere else and we heard the weather was very hot and we might prefer a hotel with air conditioning. Unfortunately we booked Hotel Rappen. The room had dust bunnies on the floor when we checked in. The air conditioning was really not that great. Amenities in hotel were plastic cup in bathroom (really?) and no lotions, etc. A shampoo, conditioner and soap in shower. Breakfast was okay. Should have went with my original choice.

As an overnight hotel, fine. Beer garden present. Friendly staff and rooms are fine.
