Hotel Sankt Josef

Small hotel certainly basic, but comfortable, quiet and cheap. Walking distance to everything. Clean room, modernized, with a very convenient luggage rest, dressing room, mini bar, safe, flat screen tv, alarm clock, hairdryer, plus some little touches (paper tissues in the bathroom, mini package of sweets on the pillow as a welcome). Good free wifi. Coffee, tea, infusions available in the central hallway when the reception is closed (at night) + drinks dispenser and snacks. Friendly and dynamic manager. Access to rooms only by stairs, so not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

If coming from the station you will see the big dome cathedral to your left and there is a lane/shortcut from heinestrasse and haugerkirchgasse to an alley that leads almost to the hotel on semmelstrasse. Saves time. The hotel is opposite the bright pink muraled Mainz hotel. Nearby is a grocery and a sports bar and a funky barber shop. Another shortcut is the lane near the hotel entrance which can take you quickly to the amazing Residenz, chapel and its grounds - the reason many visiting would be there for. Besides the palace (and park) there is a pleasant bier garten. The hotel is also not far from the central marktplatz and info centre, the heart of Wurzburg and close to the old bridge where you can, along with others, enjoy a glass of wine, admire the saints' statues and flower baskets, and watch the river freighters. We stayed up high in the hotel and didn't have to haul our heavy luggage. the reception and breakfast staff were all helpful and pleasant and the room, with view to the big dome was satisfying. There is also a machine that vends beer. The dome is worth visiting for the tall Titian and the 'stations of the cross' paintings.

We had booked a standard room. The furniture was from the 70s. But for one night, no matter. Only the bathroom didn't work. It was tiny and smelled awful. The stench spread throughout the room overnight. That's why we were happy when we finally had breakfast. There should be a breakfast buffet according to the internet. But there was no such thing. We were asked by the services force if we wanted sausage and cheese and then we were brought a plate covered with foil. So you can't choose anything. That's not what we mean by buffet. There was no hot food either. The so-called buffet area only contained things that do not need to be refrigerated or kept warm. After the smell and the disappointing breakfast, we can only give one star.
