I had booked the apartment Abendstern for a stay in May 2026 for my blind mother and me. When I informed the property in advance that my mother would be accompanied by her trained and certified guide dog, we were rigorously denied stay.
The accommodation refused to recognize the absolutely necessary medical aid as such and instead categorized the assistance dog as a “pet”. The reasons put forward were flimsy arguments such as “hygiene due to carpeting” and “15 steps” in the entrance area.
Despite my multiple and factual references to the clear legal situation in Germany – according to which assistance dogs must not be turned away – the reservations department was completely ignorant. Instead of respecting applicable law, our confirmed booking was ultimately forcibly cancelled against our express will.
Such a level of structural discrimination and lack of professionalism is absolutely unacceptable. Anyone who values inclusion, applicable law and respectful treatment of guests should take a big step around this house. Absolutely not recommended for people with disabilities.

Our stay at the hotel was unfortunately very disappointing. As a family with two young children (3 and 5 years old) we felt unwelcome and badly treated.
Service:
The staff were often unfriendly (especially sad - it was the senior staff) and unhelpful, especially when dealing with our children. Our requests were often ignored or reluctantly answered. We felt that families were not welcome here.
Conclusion:
This hotel is definitely not suitable for families. We felt unwelcome and poorly looked after. We will certainly not come back and cannot recommend the Hotel Abendstern.

I would never book hostel type accommodation, but that’s exactly what we ended up with here.
The place was badly misrepresented, being old, quirky and in need of refurbishments. The carpets in the public areas were threadbare in places. Encountering other “guests” in passing, left you with an uneasy feeling.
Where “Apartment” comes in, I do not know. We were lead to believe that this accommodation was separate from the hotel, but it was just a room in the hotel, the size of a prison cell. Nothing like the picture on the front of the confirmation email from Booking.Com. The “kitchen” area was a joke, with the electric kettle and microwave powered by dangerous trailing leads that didn’t reach the floor.
We were given another room, which although bigger, was totally uncomfortable and lacking facilities. Where were the promised “toiletries”?
The wifi did not work.
There was constant noise at night from loud voices and doors banging.
The receptionist was the rudest person I have ever met, and treated us with contempt as if we were a total nuisance to her.
All the pictures on line make the place look lovely, but the reality is nothing like it.
After complaining to Booking.Com, we checked out after two of our seven booked nights, on the promise of a refund.
Quite the worst accommodation I have ever encountered.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
