Best Western Residenz Hotel

The hotel is located on the edge of the old town of Detmold, it takes about 10 minutes to walk from the train station, and about 5 minutes to the old town and tourist attractions, so the location is really good. I had a single room that was nicely furnished, and the bathroom was also fine. At breakfast, there is a large selection, but not everything looks really fresh. Overall, however, a good breakfast. I would rate the hotel as "good," but unfortunately, one has to choose between satisfactory and very good here. This is a typical business hotel, everything is fine, but the hotel does not leave a lasting impression. There are certainly nice smaller hotels in the old town.

Last time we stayed here it was a Best Western, and you knew what you were getting. It's no longer in the Best Western chain and it's changed dramatically, and not for the best. On arrival the room was very warm even though the window was slightly cracked open, we were soon to find out this was as far as it did open. After five minutes of not being able to turn the air conditioner on I gave up and went back down to reception (no phone in the room) to ask how to turn it on. Turns out that the air conditioning system has been decommissioned! We got a fan but of course all that does is move the hot air around. Even with the fan on, and sleeping with just a sheet on, the room was far too warm to be able to sleep comfortably, this would be the main reason why we would advise anyone from staying in this hotel. They've also taken the mini bar fridges out of the rooms and, with no bar in the hotel and no ice machine we couldn’t get a cold drink in the room for the six days that we were there! Breakfast is included.... As long as you like luke-warm bacon and eggs, bad luck if you wanted toast, they've taken the toaster out of the breakfast room. They do have a reasonable selection of cold meats and cheeses. In the quest to be 'Green' they have a system where you can opt out of having your room serviced daily but you can (in theory) collect clean and dry towels from the 'self-service' room. A fine idea, in theory, but as there was never any clean towels there it falls down in practice! It was strange to see in their quest to be 'Green' they still have an old halogen globe in the bathroom! The bathroom is adequate, the shower is over the bath so there is a big step in and out but the shower is good and hot. It's a great location but the lack of air-conditioning and having no room fridge or ice means we can no longer recommend this hotel. Photos show no towels in the self-help room, a general view of our room (notice two single mattress on the double base and fan) and the halogen globe in the bathroom.

Central location with good parking facilities in garage. Self-check-in at the hotel worked great. Unfortunately, the airflow did not work at all in the room or bathroom. Hot day made the night hard. Very good and fresh breakfast, quiet dining room.
