Kaiser Am Wienerplatz

This is a fine hotel.Its close to the main public transport towards the city centre (10 minutes ride) . Rooms and bathroom are clean. The hotel is a little bit dated but it gives its charm to this Hotel. The breakfast is very good . Staff is friendly and helpful.

We booked this hotel for a work trip - it wasn't our first choice but it was the only one that fell within our budget during a very busy period in Cologne. I'll start with the one pro: - Location - it's in Wienerplatz, right near the tram/train and only a few stops from Koelnmesse. That really is it for the pros of Kaiser Hotel - apparently the breakfast at this hotel is good, but myself and my colleagues didn't have it so can't comment. Now, onto the cons: The noise - this hotel was really noisy. The walls aren't well-insulated, so don't bother setting an alarm as the room next door's alarm will probably wake you up. And if the alarm doesn't then that other bed-related activity (!) will. The guests in one of the rooms on the first floor had a good night... ;) The decor - this hotel is in dire need of a decorative face-lift. It reeks of 80s naffness - lots of wood panelling (although apparently that's just traditional German decor) and headache-inducing soft furnishings. And it just generally looks very scruffy. There was an odd painting above the bed of one of the rooms (see pic attached to this review) who we nicknamed Brunhilde and who will haunt my dreams forever. Smelly showers - in two out of the three rooms we booked, each time you turned the shower on, there was an overwhelming stench of drains/eggs/sulphur. For a minute I wondered if the hotel was drawing it's water from some of volcanic hot spring, but no, it's just stinking drains... The bathroom is also another source of noise - each time someone used the shower or flushed the toilet, you could hear the really loud noise of water running through the water pipe system in your own bathroom. This woke me up on my first night, even with my bathroom door shut. Plus, the water in the showers was difficult to control - it was either very, very hot or lukewarm. Rubbish pillows and ill-fitting sheets - if you like a flat pillow, you're in luck. Otherwise, be prepared to fold your pillow on top of itself multiple times. The sheets didn't seem to fit the already quite small single bed I was using, so you could see the edge of the mattress...ick. Curtains that aren't wide enough for window - in one of the rooms on the first floor, the window is wide (although the room still managed to be dark and dreary as the lights were rubbish) but the curtains aren't wide enough to cover the whole space. Even with net curtains, people would be able to see into the room while standing at the bus stop opposite the hotel, especially when dark. No credit card machine - as mentioned in other reviews, it's frankly bizarre why a well-established hotel is unable to take credit card payments. Thankfully, we didn't need to pay anything in cash as we'd paid up front via a booking site. However, we chose not to pay for breakfast in the hotel purely because we would have had to pay with cash and not card. So that's about it. Apparently this hotel is 4* but I think that's out of date rating. It's closer to 2 or 3 stars now, and I'd only recommend it if you've exhausted all other options in your price bracket.

This hotel is located close to Wiener Platz, by the transport hub for bus and U Bahn. The main railway station and S Bahn (Mulheim) is located a good 10 minutes walk away. Rooms are on the small side and basis, however quite sufficient for a couple of nights stay.Nice size TV,good free WiFi and good heating. Excellent breakfast with a decent size variety of various meat,fruits,bread,sweets and drinks.Friendly run family hotel and staff.
