Mercure Trier Porta Nigra

Hotel is perfectly located just off the Porta Nigra and 2 steps from the city center. There is a car park under the hotel with very favorable rate. Rooms and bathrooms are spacious, with good beds and air conditioning. 2 minuses for the room are the lack of a refrigerator and the fact that there is carpet. Reception was friendly and professional. The breakfast buffet was extensive and tasty and with a beautiful view. We dined 1 evening in the hotel restaurant, but that was very mediocre.

Great location, but the hotel feels outdated. The 90 cm bed is too narrow for a comfortable night's sleep. The air conditioning is noisy, and opening the window isn't a good option because of the traffic noise. The wall-to-wall carpet also feels unhygienic by today's standards. Breakfast was average, the bar was closed, and the parking behind the hotel was convenient.

This hotel clearly has pros and cons... Pros: very good location right in front of the Porta Nigra, nicely renovated bathroom, excellent breakfast buffet, all day air conditioning in the room. Cons: Rooms rather old fashioned, restaurant closed without notice due to Porta Nigra fest, gruff staff. It was of course extremely hot, so you could do almost nothing. Even a boat trip on the Moselle was too hot...Porta Nigra was not to visit because of stage for Porta Nigra fest...
