Villa Medici

Stay away. We had great experiences in all of our hotels during our most recent trip to Europe but this one was the one black mark on our whole trip. First of all, the hotel owner doesn't stay on premises, and is very hard to get ahold of. Probably the worst combination for a service industry location is not being available to your guests. Owner wanted to charge me a late charge since I came at 9pm. I came to a hotel in a major city in the evening only to be threatened with additional fees. Not a good start. It seemed like the hotel was more of a hostel. A couple younger travelers from Asia in one room and in another a family that apparently lived in the hotel. Noone else was there. The pool is completely drained and roped off - not noted on booking or kayak. The owner got angry when it was suggested that the pool was listed as an amenity - as if it was our fault. Then our room. While spacious, it smelled both musty and like someone had chain smoked there for years. Fixtures and furniture were adequate but old and in need of an upgrade. Bathroom was spartan as well with some mold growing around grout and caulking. Kitchen area was adequate with sink, microwave and refrigerator - although fridge also smelled of mold. We found another hotel and left early. The worst.
