I booked on the day of my arrival for 2 nights for 1 person I got there late evening on a Thursday, no parking whatsoever in and around the hotel even though they publicize that there are parking spaces at the hotel but none of them where available and they ask €15 per night.
When I arrived the plan was to quickly drop off my belongings and make my way out to visit friends. I was given my room key and I happily headed towards my allocated room, problem was when I arrived I could not open the door and After a few tries a man opened the door! I was so confused, headed to reception where the guy was super apologetic but also seemed confused when I told him that my room was already taken...and then after he found a room he told me he will give me an upgrade by allocating me to a quadruple room. I was alone but hey I'll take a big room.
It was room 110/112 it has a single entrance and then two doors where there are 1 double bed in one room and 2 bunk beds in the other. I quicky dropped my stuff and left without actually looking around the room but I could tell it was certainly way outdated with most of the corridor walls being actual massive mirror walls and the color of the let's say "normal" walls where red with a black shiny frame.
When I left to go see my friends they guy at reception asked me if I liked the room, I just said... It's certainly big.
Went out and came back at around 1.45am went upstairs and went straight to bed.
The next day when I woke up I could finally look around the room, this is where the nightmare begins. Dirty carpets with bits of all sorts on the floor and I mean all sorts from fluff to hairs to even small plastic wrappers/bags. The wallpaper was blood red but most of it was peeling off and in some areas was completely ripped off, stained or both. There was painters tape hanging over the edge of the Aircon fans on the ceiling. Fridges were leaking water and weren't working right. Complementary (I think) jug of water not filled but with some water in it, electrical sockets with screws sticking out and not fitted properly, burnt yellow/orange cigarette marks all over the sink in the bathroom and the main water tube at the bottom of the sink was filthy and stained by what i could only put to leaking water, I had a shower and when I went to dry myself with the large towel I realized one side was completely covered in foundation (make-up for women) and there were pubic hairs all over the bidet and toilet rim.
The room was actually quite scary and with the color combination and mirror walls you'd sometimes get startled as you would see reflections of someone but then realized oh no it's actually my shoulder which is being mirrored through and bounced between the walls.
There's more but it's all quite disgusting and simply unacceptable. That day I spoke to the receptionist Giulia and firstly sked if she ever saw that room. She said no and explained there are new owners and that all rooms will be refurbished. I explained my ordeal and she was extremely sorry and understanding and offered me immediately a fresh large towel and I asked her when the person in charge would be next in, she told me in the morning. I spent the day out of course and retuned in the evening and had an early night as I was leaving the next morning.
This is where the thing went from wrong to absolutely awful. I checked out with a lady at reception with an accent, she wasn't Italian but confirmed she was la direttrice meaning basically the manager/director.
I asked her if she was aware of my room situation and she said no which upset me as I really thought that a handover note/message would be left explaining to the morning PIC (person in charge) that a customer was unhappy and raised some serious issues. I have worked in hospitality in central London for many years and of course have some knowledge of how things work and the standards/checks/risk assessments that must be carried out to make sure the establishment meets health and safety regulations and most importantly that it is generally safe for all types of customers, from families to disabled clientele.
So I began explaining the list of problems right there in the reception but the 'direttrice' should have brought me to one side and calmly, professional and most importantly because she wants to know all details of the problem but all I got was an immediate defensive attitude and a sense of like misbelief as if I was making it up;I knew this conversions wasn't going to go anywhere when I told her about the wallpaper falling apart and her reply was yeah but it's wallpaper, like it wasn't a big deal and that the state of the stained, broken, awful walls and ceiling was ok, as in OCTOBER they would change the decor as it hadn't been changed since the 70's and my immediate reply was... Are you still going to allow guests to stay there through the entire summer with the place looking like that and she said yes. I I was gob smacked by her ignorance and her way of trying to give reason to something that isn't acceptable but again the walls were the least of it, I told her about the towel and dirt and voiced my opinion about maybe the room being missed by the cleaning team as my original room was already taken and perhaps taken by the embarrassing moment the guy at reception on my arrival probably just went for the first room available not realizing the room hadn't been cleaned or that there was work being carried out as like I said there were signs of builders had been there recently. Anyways, she abruptly then takes the computer off her work desk and places it on the reception desk pointing at the screen saying we publicize our rooms as they are, and kept saying: " look all our rooms have red walls." I kindly asked her to take the computer away and tried to make her understand that the issues were that serious that if a check from the council and/or any third party health and safety firm would most probably deem the room unsafe and would probably close you down until the issues were fixed or worst fine and revoke any licence you had for not adhering to regulations etc... again after all this said all she told me and probably registered was that she was offended as I presumed the cleaning of the room got missed on the day of my arrival. (Which in an " ideal" " not so ideal" situation I probably would have accepted it and put it to the fact the hotel was under new management and errors happen and bla bla bla). But no..
I was starting to have enough of this and just wanted to leave, I did not want anything from this, no discounts or anything of that kind even though the cost of the room which came to €133 for the 2 nights would have at least got refunded as a minimum to show a gesture of goodwill... But of course that wasn't the case and the cherry on the cake was when she blurted out so what do you want out of this? That was it, I told her ok... I tried to help as a professional in the industry and all I would have wanted was for her to accept, understand and action a solution to all the problems raised by a paying customer but now I warned her that I would make sure everyone that would ever think of maybe staying at this hotel would know what they could perhaps be facing. I also finished off by saying that even though all works were to begin in October the reception lounge area was immaculate and modern as if to put a mask over a very ugly and potentially dangerous place. I explained how a bad review with real substance and not just a slur could easily affect the business in a negative way especially when they had just taken over as new owners....what does she say, that she felt I was threatening her. I just left and told her that I wasn't going to pay the tassa di soggiorno and the 1 night parking which probably didn't even reach €30 and she accepted that (at least). I asked her one more time are you sure you don't want to do something about this? Like a gesture of goodwill or anything to alleviate the situation. She said no. So that's why NOW I would really like her to understand maybe the hard way what trying to scam clients by showing a glowing reception area that hides a red and black dungeon filled with dirt, stains and disgust eventually gets you 1 Star review on every single possible site where the hotel is advertised and maybe whoever the lady is will be sat down by the actual owners and explained how she should act in a management role in hospitality when dealing with complaints this severe. If you are thinking of booking your holiday accommodation at this hotel. Think again or maybe wait until OCTOBER when the place will be hopefully safer to return to, however, if your someone staying there this summer, all I can say is good luck.
