Hotel San Marino

Very nice family-run hotel, with good food, breakfast exceeding expectations, pool with a beautiful view, and a lovely relaxation area.

We were pleasantly surprised. The place has a vintage retro style in a very special setting. It is as if time has stopped. We were three women, and we stayed in a room with a balcony that had beautiful views of the lake. A family hotel with very hospitable and super friendly hosts. Excellent service. Abundant breakfast, renovated bathroom. Perhaps the mattresses could be improved, although we slept very well, all three of us. I would undoubtedly repeat my stay. The price/quality ratio is perfect.

The very first impression of this hotel is that it is directly on the very noisy main road. We entered on the ground floor and then eventually saw the signs which directed us to reception on the second floor. When we got there the owner was watching daytime television in a small untidy lounge area they have in the same room as the breakfast/ dining room, we felt like we had interrupted. In fact it seems this is their only living space as they and their daughter also eat and watch television there in the evening, all very audible and visible while you are having dinner. The rooms are large and although the decor here and in the guest areas appears very dated in style, the hotel is very well maintained and clean. Our room had the most amazing views of Lake Como and a small balcony with a table and 2 chairs, lovely for a coffee. The rooms are double glazed for the noise but there is always a constant drone from the road below which is louder when motorbikes or unmuffled cars race by. The owners offer the bare amount of service to get by, no welcome smiles, cheery small talk or offers of assistance, we felt like we were living in their home and were being tolerated. The young man who served us in the restaurant and cleans the rooms was wonderful, the best thing there, very personable, always smiling and as helpful as he could be given the restrictions he had. There is nowhere or noone to do any level of laundry and no help at all if you want a taxi or transport. One helpful thing we were told by the owner was that there is a small supermarket up the road where you can get necessities and some deli items, and there is also a pleasant cafe right next door. The included breakfast is quite basic but it is nice enough, also a modern automatic coffee machine for unlimited coffees.
