Hotel San Rocco

My partner and I stayed at Hotel San Rocco during our couples' trip, and it exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxing and romantic, with beautiful views of Lake Orta that made the whole experience feel special. The location is perfect—close enough to explore Orta San Giulio on foot while still offering a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. Our room was comfortable, well-maintained, and spotless throughout our stay. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help, which made us feel genuinely valued as guests. We also felt the hotel offered excellent value for the quality of the experience, especially considering the stunning setting and amenities. The pool, lakeside areas, and overall facilities were all well cared for and added to the enjoyment of our stay. We would happily return and highly recommend Hotel San Rocco to anyone looking for a romantic getaway in Italy.

Beautiful location, but the hotel is characterless. The wall paint colour adds the to darkness throughout. Very inadequate lighting in our room which made it impossible to read. The air con is very hit and miss and it appears it cannot be controlled by the guests. The shower screen came half way across the bath, but unfortunately the water ran along the bottom and onto the floor resulting in a flood every time it was used. This would be probably explain the damp spots on the bedroom wall, presumably from the room above having the same issue. The pool and terrace area were very pleasant, but on the day it rained the indoor area was very basic. I cannot comment on the restaurant as we ate out each night, but the breakfast was very good. It’s just a shame the ‘breakfast room’ was not more inspiring, If you were lucky enough to to get a table by the window that was fine, but otherwise it was quite gloomy. The staff were all quite cheerful but maintenance was conspicuous by its absence. We reported that one of our two lightbulbs had blown but it was never replaced during our stay. In my opinion this hotel does not qualify as luxury.

Unfortunately our stay in the Hotel San Rocco on Lake Orta was not a good experience. My husband and I were there with my parents in the first week of Sept 2026 to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. The fabric of the hotel was tired, dark and not very clean. The food was mostly terrible and extremely slow to arrive. We visit Italy frequently and have never had such a poor experience. That being said, the setting and views of Lake Orta are beautiful. Going into a little more detail on the food. We were there on a half board basis. The breakfast was OK. Nothing special, but no major complaint. Bar service was OK too. Our evening meal on the first night was brilliant, but it was if the chef disappeared afterwards, never to be seen again. Our second night was my parents’ special evening. We ordered a good wine and then waited, and waited. Our starter was a poached egg with what turned out to be a spray of truffle oil, which took an hour to arrive. This was followed by sliced turkey, which was dry, overcooked and without even a dashing of olive oil for moisture. We saw very few side vegetables or salad all week and there were no condiments on the table. The hotel knew it was a special evening for us, but there was not so much as a “Happy Anniversary!”. This is just one of numerous examples of poor food. The waiters and waitresses were apologetic and embarrassed. We don’t know what was going on behind the scenes, but it was pretty clear all was not well. I have attached some pictures of the tired hotel. The pool water smelt of algae, the shower curtain was disgusting, the dark rooms weren’t helped by a lack of lightbulbs. I asked for the 3 dead ones in our room to be changed, but they weren’t; and the room floors were dirty. Such a shame.
