Abbazia

This hotel, located a 4-5 min walk from the Venezia Santa Lucia train station, is a gem. It is a former abbey converted into a hotel. The decoration of the premises is beautiful and refined, with reminders of the vestiges of the place. The welcome is warm, the team is friendly and helpful. Our room, air-conditioned and perfectly soundproofed, was large, with comfortable bedding and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. Toiletries are provided. The breakfast was magnificent: sweet, savory, with fresh breads and pastries made on-site and quality local products. Finally, the hotel has a large luggage room that allows you to enjoy your day and come back to pick up your luggage without stress to head back to the nearby train station.

Hotel Abbazia is an old-world style hotel on a quiet side street but just off of a bustling and (too) congested street filled with tourist-centered shops and restaurants (including a full supermarket). The hotel is almost adjacent to the Santa Lucia train station, extremely close to a vaporetto stop ("Ferrovia"), and perhaps a 7-minute walk to Piazzale Roma (buses, taxis, and some shopping), but the hotel is somewhat far from the even-more congested tourist areas such as St. Mark's Square. The hotel itself is well kept (although at the time of our visit the garden was unappealing), with a large and comfortable seating area next to the front desk. Guest bedrooms vary greatly in size, so choose carefully. Ours was clean and quiet. The front-desk staff members were knowledgeable and helpful but could have provided greater assistance with luggage. The buffet breakfast (included in the room rate) was fine; the hotel might add more choices for cold cereal (seemed to have only a corn-flake type cereal), a hot cereal (such as oatmeal), and more fresh fruit (such as berries). (And, yes, chicken wings are on the buffet.) Overall, if the neighborhood fits your interest, this hotel would be a reasonable choice.
