Alla Corte Rossa

This is not a hotel in the classic sense, but a privately run house with individual smaller accommodation units and a breakfast service. In a basket, a typical Italian breakfast is delivered to the room door at a pre-arranged time. In the room there is a small table and chairs so you can comfortably eat there. The staircase is already a bit worn out and the handrails would also have to be cleaned once again (better: at least twice a day!), but the room was cleaned daily and was in principle fine. From the two windows one looked out on one of the numerous canals and the bustling hustle and bustle. Unfamiliar was the bathroom: the toilet dates back to the last century and the shower needs some artistry and body feeling to find the right position here to direct the water on itself and not on the shower curtain or even into the bathroom. Some unpleasant smells had to be accepted...

Our room was very comfortable except for the mosquitoes. I guess we could have kept the windows closed all day but … maybe screens on the windows would help. There is breakfast included but you don’t go to a common area, they bring it up to you in a basket. Up all those stairs as there isn’t an elevator. It is typical Italian breakfast so more like dessert for me. Also, there is no provision for diet requirements. No vegan, no gluten free etc. The hotel is in Dorsoduro, calm and quiet but in good walking proximity to all the attractions. Though not specific to Alla Corte Rossa, beware of buying bottled water. It’s quite scary what they charge for it.

We returned to Venice again this year for the carnival and for the first time we stayed at the Corte Rossa. Wonderful everything: staff, room, view.... The excellent breakfast served in the room is a real added value. The triple room on the top floor that we were assigned is really super. I have rarely seen rooms so spacious and comfortable. A 5-star treatment at a very competitive price. I recommend it to everyone!
